8 million to take part in Guatemala’s ICJ Referendum

Guatemala has begun preparations to organize the referendum on the territorial dispute with Belize. The simultaneous referenda are scheduled for October sixth, 2013 when residents in both countries will vote on whether or not the claim will be taken to the International Court of Justice for a final resolution. According to a report in the Prensa Latino Newspaper, on Monday Guatemala’s legislature president, Gudy Rivera delivered the necessary legal documents to Maria Eugenia Villagran of the Supreme Electoral Court for consideration by a panel of judges.  Authorization is also required from the Congress of the Republic for the process to continue. A proposed budget for supplies, training of polling and temporary staff is expected to be submitted to the Ministry of Finance in that country on July twelfth. In Guatemala, it is estimated that eight million people will register to participate in the referendum. The article ends saying that experts believe the referendum will contribute to a peaceful and permanent solution of the differences between the two countries and allow for greater bilateral cooperation.

  1. Storm says:

We’ll learn a lot from this vote, whether and to what extent the Guats want to conquer the Jewel.

Regardless of this vote, the reality is that they outnumber us more than 30 to 1, and they are invading the Jewel everyday by entering and staying without permission — then being gifted the right to vote by GOB.

We need to elect a GOB that will secure our border and protect our population, or we will soon be consumed by the flood of illegal immigration that we simply cannot absorb.

Guatemala is eating us alive today!

  2. True Belizean says:

Guatemala need to speak to the British in regard to their claim. Since Belize has gotten it’s INDEPENDENCE FROM ENGLAND there is no Country in this world that can claim BELIZE. BELIZE IS FOR BELIZEANS AND GUATEMALA SHOULD TRY TO TAKE CARE OF THIER OWN INTERNAL PROBLEMS WHICH IS SO DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO DEAL WITH.

    Belice esta para Belicenos

  3. Farid says:

“Not one square centimeter” George C. Price. My fellow Belizean make this our motto on Referendum. Let’s not be fooled by those that seeks other interest in our Jewel.
As the X say “Power to the People.”

  4. cayobway says:

send miss tamai to guat she will disqualify thier vote, for cause of signature not the same.

  5. rubs says:

  7. Marcos Chaltuso says:

BELICE ES DE LOS !@#$% BELIZENOS.NADA DE ….. GUATES AQUI !!!

VALLAN PARA SUS TIERRA, BARROW NO LES QUIERE AQUI, NADIE LES QUIERE AQUI.
SOLAMENTE LOS MAYAS PEUDEN RECLAMAR BELICE, Y TODO CENTRO AMERICA Y MEXICO.
NOSOTROS LOS MAYAS VAMOS A REINAR UN VEZ MAZ , DIOS MEDIANTE, Y VAMOS A RECONQUISTAR NUESTRAS TIERRAS !!!

  8. BZ DAPPA says:

Marcos, if Belize and all of Central America is going to be regained by the Maya from both England and Spain one day like you said, then why are you speaking in the slave master’s language (Spanish) as suppose to Mayan dialect?

  9. Mr. T says:

We are not claming belize as a whole, we’re claming the half of the territory that belongs to Guatemala, for the treaty that was broken in 1859. Belizeans who want to stay in their half is ok, and those who want to stay in our claimed half is ok too, no need to get angry. In the end, it will work out fine, trust us.
