New guides for CSEC and Cape students

CXC and Cape Students will now have the opportunity to use student friendly study guides in preparation for their exams.  In 2009, Nelson Thornes Limited, publisher of a number of Caribbean publications, including the West Indian Reader, signed a contract with CXC to distribute Caribbean Secondary Examination Council and Cape study materials. 2012 is the first year for the launch of books across a wide subject area, including eight for CSEC and seven for CAPE. Representative of Thorne Publisher says that the books are representative of this region and were done in collaboration of local authors, teachers and principal with the input of UK authors.

Oliver Thornton, Int’l Publisher, Nelson Thornes Ltd

“We had long discussion with CXC for what exactly is required and there are plenty of text books available for students. I think there are twenty one titles for I.T. in CSEC, for instance, there are a lot for students to choose from. We felt that it needs to be a little bit more in respect of a synthesis of content but also exam practice as well so we had that discussion with CXC and thought that this format is the best way in approaching that. So in respect of affordability, we decided with CXC that each book must be a hundred and ninety two pages so you have to get everything in. In each instance they’ve managed it very well.”

“When is a student supposed to actually start using this? How early on?”

Oliver Thornton

“Whenever they like. I mean really, I would have thought that it would be in the beginning of the second year that they will start have a look at these. There is never any harm in that when you’ve covered a topic and you feel that you need supplementary support to doing it as soon as possible. So in the end, the decision is yours and so yes, there is a lot of exam practice in there. These will help students in perhaps providing some focus but there are many factors  that lead to problems in terms of marks and results in exams; that can be the quality of teaching; home life; economic; so there’s a multitude of factors.”

“Well, I was just going to ask, do you envision the guide being a tool for preparing for the exam or the guide being a tool for students to be able to understand the curriculum?”

Oliver Thornton

“It’s about understanding; definitely about understanding. This is very much about getting to know the subject and understand it rather than rouging for the exam.”

The book features double spread pages and are interactive; some with accompanying discs. The books are available from Mickey Craig at the Belize Book Center.
