Gunman kills 2nd brother in 2 weeks

Dwight Panton

There have been no murders in the City since Monday, but to start the weekend, a shooting on Mex Avenue after four o’clock this afternoon left one man dead. Thirty-six year old Edmond Panton, also known as Sinbad, was killed when a lone, masked gunman on a bicycle opened fire on him as he exited his mother’s residence. Edmond had just dropped his mother home when he was blasted by gunshots. He was shot on the neck and back and then rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, but later died. If the name Panton sounds familiar; that is because exactly two weeks ago, his older brother, thirty-eight year old Dwight Panton, was killed in a shootout between rivaling gang members at the Elements Pool and Bar on Newtown Barracks. Both brothers were in that crossfire when Dwight was killed and it appears that the gunman came to complete the hit.   News Five spoke with a witness off-camera.

Duane Moody

“Just after four, gunshots rang out. Did you hear; did you see anything?”

Voice of: Witness

“Well when I came out on the verandah of my home, all I saw was police coming from down the street and some going down the street; up stop. I didn’t hear any gunshot at all.”

Duane Moody

“With a body in there?”

Voice of: Witness

“Yes sir.”

Duane Moody

“So you haven’t heard anything? You didn’t see anything?”

Voice of: Witness

“No.”

Dwight was buried this past Monday. Regarding the investigation into the Elements Bar shootout during which several persons were injured, two minors, a sixteen year old and a seventeen year old have been detained along with eighteen year old Kevin Alvarez, twenty year old Wilbert Gentle and twenty-three year old Ian Haylock.

I am sick and tired of the carnage in the streets, gangsters killing each other and innocent Belizeans as well.

I want GOB to use force and more force against the gangsters, GSU and BDF, too.

And perhaps most important, let the good people to secure their neighbourhoods and hunt down the criminals who operate in them, as they seem to be beginning to do that in Cayo and maybe Corozal.

Appeasement will never work — when you subsidise bad behaviour, you just get more of it. Abandon the foolish “gang truce” and use that money to make GSU more powerful.

  6. REALIZE says:

REST IN PEACE, EDMUND AND DWIGHT…..THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE! I TOO GREW UP WITH/LIVED NEXT DOOR TOO EDMUND, DWIGHT, AND SHANTS, IN LOS ANGELES AS YOUNG KIDS…….I REALLY DO SYMPATHIZE WITH HIS MOM AND DAD.

MAY U GUYS REST IN PEACE!!!

AGAIN… UNTIL BELIZE(THE CITY) TAKE A STAND, THE COUNTRY WILL CONTINUOSLY RUN WILD, AND THERE WILL BE NO CHANGE! THE PEOPLE SHOULD REALLY GET TOGETHER AND FLOOD THE GATES OF THE GOV, FOR WHATEVER CHANGES THEY WANT TOO SEE …… IF THE PEOPLE, ONLY KNEW, THAT THE POWER IS IN THEIR HANDS!!!

  7. Louis says:

    Message for the UDP:

The UDP needs to change Barrow for John Saldivar as PM.

John Saldivar should be sworn in as the new PM of Belize.

  8. FAR AWAY says:

IS THERE ANY BACKBONE LEFT, IN THE PEOPLE OF BELIZE???

I MEAN REALLY! OR IS IT FEAR??? YES, I AGREE, THAT WE SHOULD USE WISDOM, AND MOVE CAUTIOUSLY, BUT GOD HAS NOT GIVEN US THE SPIRIT OF FEAR, BUT POWER, LOVE, PEACE, HAPPINESS AND A SOUND MIND…….WHAT MORE DOES IT HAVE TO TAKE, FOR THE PEOPLE TO SIMPLY GET SICK, AND TIRED, AND BEGIN TOO PROTEST TO REACH THE GOB’S ATTENTION AND LET THEM KNOW, YOU ALL, “THE PEOPLE” ARE SERIOUS, AND DEMANDING CHANGE. IF THE PEOPLE, TAKE A SERIOUS STAND, AND TALK UP, THINGS CAN BE REVERSED, AND EVEN MINISTERS CAN BE REPLACED. MAYBE NOT OVERNIGHT, BUT IT CAN HAPPEN. HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE… CUZ AT THE RATE THAT ITS GOING NOW, SOON YOU WILL LOOK UP, AND THERE WILL BE A GREAT SHORTAGE OF MEN………A HUGE GENERATION GAP!! I MEAN, DONT U CARE?? OR IS IT THAT, IT JUST HASNT REACHED YOUR DOOR YET, SO YOUR NOT AS AFFECTED?… WELL, THE REALITY OF IT, IS, THAT IT CAN BE YOUR DOOR NEXT, IF IT HASNT COME ALREADY. AND FROM THE LOOKS OF IT, YOU DONT NECESSARILY HAVE TO GANG BANG, FOR IT TO BE YOUR DOOR!

First I’ll like to give my condolence to the Panton family friends and love ones.Sinbad was a very close friend.Devoted father and family man who would always have something constructive to say.He and I had countless amounts of good times. My heart goes out to his Mother, her pain is unimaginable.

  11. Eyes wide shut says:

My deepest condolences go out to the Panton family. R.I.P Dwight and Edmond Panton.

  12. shabba says:

it’s not the government’s fault it’s the people. It’s family and friends who haubor and benefit from these people. If ur brother or son eena gang or da gunman throw a outa the house. The people need a zero tolerance policy to crime. Talk bout hang people, how yu wah hang anybody without a conviction. When the police doing it’s investigation nobody nevah see anything.

  13. OriginalWoman says:

Wise words shabba. I totally agree….we need to look in our own homes and yards and clean that out first. It is easy to pass the blame and not look in the mirror and see the ROOT OF ALL EVIL. If we want change, we ALL have to come together and MAKE A CHANG!!!!

  14. Love SAys: says:

First i want to give my condolence to the Paton family especially Vernette. The Belizean in Los Angeles want to know why the goverment can’t get the Gans and the Crimes undercontroll, if Mr. Barrow and the BDF can not do the job then they should step down. the country need to ask for out side help, people are afraid to visit because they do not want to be kill this is nonsense.

  15. Louis says:

I have said it before and will say it again:

UDP and Mr. John Saldivar, you need to take over the GOB and give us a new PM. If you don’t step up NOW, you will lose next election.

Dean Barrow needs to go, for the good of Belize.

  16. Disown mi country says:

Like I said, stay away. Jewel my foot. Tell your friends not to go there. When the tourism dollars stop,GOB will act

  17. Phicl says:

@Shabba, you just said a mouthful. Most people are putting the blame on the wrong end of the spectrum.

  18. ang says:

soon only mothers will be in Belize? Mr. Shabba has a good point.
