Lynch mob waits for Bert Vasquez to be charged for Jasmine’s Murder

A people’s movement against crime reached epic proportions in the west today. Since early this morning, a crowd began to swell in front of the San Ignacio Police Station as demonstrators waited for the arraignment of the suspect in the murder of thirteen year Jasmine Lowe.  Bert Vasquez, aka Bert Haylock of Belize City was being questioned by police since Monday. The Belize City businessman was first busted for preying on a young girl of the San Ignacio Area. When he was apprehended in the Branch Mouth area he had a minor in his vehicle; that prompted allegations by numerous young girls, as many as eleven that he had attempted to lure them into his car. A ring belonging to Jasmine was also found in his vehicle along with numerous license plates. This morning as the demonstrators waited in the sweltering sun, the mood changed from one of anticipation to agitation. The residents of the western communities cried for justice at whatever cost.  We have full reports from the remarkable movement in San Ignacio, and we start with the scene this morning in front of the police station with freelance reporter, Duane Moody.

Hundreds of persons, some say as many as a thousand from all walks of life, gathered in front of the San Ignacio Police Station waiting and demanding the arraignment of the suspect in the murder of thirteen year old Jasmine Lowe. Justice for Jasmine was their main cry at a demonstration that started as early as eight this morning. Resident Gina Tillett says they are ready to take matters into their own hands if justice is not served.

Gina Tillett

Gina Tillett, Resident

“Justice and if they can’t do it, we will show them how it is done out here. This is the last child that this happens to in Belize—not only in Cayo. This dah noh just only about Jasmine. He attempted to pick up several other little girls and we aren’t standing for that. So if the justice system can’t do it, we will do it for them. And we are very serious because we are not backing down. We have been here from eight o’clock and we were here all day yesterday and we are going to stay here until justice is served. However means by any means necessary—ih noh matter how—cause we noh play soh dah Cayo.  And the police can bring teargas if all dehn want because if they think that we dah the bad one, then dah so we gwen on.”

The crowd was overflowing in front of the police station, traffic came to a halt.  At around ten o’clock police officers had to intervene to allow the flow of traffic. There was uproar from the huge crowd as police cordoned off the street. Moments later the Commanding Officer of the San Ignacio Formation, Senior Superintendent Chester Williams, asked for cooperation.

“{Crowd shouting} Once again, power to the people and we ask that it be done peacefully.”

“Mister Chester just informed us that he is working along with us but he wants us to work along with them too. So he will divert the traffic and he will not have the police come out here with sticks; you know, fearing the people. He just pleading that he will work with us, but he wants us to work with him also because it is a peaceful demonstration and we just want justice. And people are out here for that. It’s time to give these guys what they deserve. We can’t have them coming into Cayo and soliciting our little kids. It’s wrong!  This is San Ignacio and Santa Elena and we are going to fight for our children!”

And around ten-thirty, the riot squad was brought in. They were subsequently withdrawn and cooler heads prevailed among the demonstrators.

Kimo Jolly, Cayo Resident

“Me personally, I think everybody here has helped solved this case. Jasmine’s killing had already gotten away. And now more cases had people vigilant and everybody was calling and with everybody cooperating we were able to catch the man. Now we have to help the police. We have to work along with the police to catch these types of criminals. So far I think we’ve done good; now we have to be patient. The police are identifying more people that know him; they are getting more witnesses. Now we have to stay here and be patient. We might have to give up a whole day to ensure that this person goes through the court as it is supposed to.”

Glen Velasquez, Taxi Operator

Glen Velasquez

“I need apology from the police department. I get hurt bad. I loose wah lot. Dehn lock me up and until Thursday night bout eight-thirty, nine dehn let me go; messed up my reputation. Dehn say dah wah taxi, I run taxi—messed up my reputation. People fraid fi ride taxi sake ah this stupid fool yah. But I thank god that the people di see that dah noh no taxi man do it. Thank god. I want to call pan all the taxi man fi come out and unite fi deh yah with me yah. This dah noh no joke, we need this man out yah. We noh want the police take car ah ahn; we want take care ah ahn. We want ahn now. Ih noh have to go dah no court; ih noh need fi go dah supreme Court, ih need fi come dah fi we court make we take care ah ahn. We wah make justice quick fast asdn hurry fi ahn.”

Chris Lowe

Chris Lowe, the father of Jasmine Lowe, was among the demonstrators. He says it is time for action against criminals who prey on young girls.

Chris Lowe, Father of Jasmine Lowe

“It’s been incredible and it is about time—it is about time we tell these predators that we are finished with this. You are not gonna abduct our children any more. Move their business elsewhere. Hopefully god will take care; I have faith in that. But our young girls are not to be taken anymore.”

Duane Moody

“It’s almost midday and the heat is on, but that will not deter the residents of Santa Elena and San Ignacio as they gather in front of the police station. They are adamant for justice and they will wait here as the alleged culprit will be taken from the police station to the Magistrate’s Court to be charged. Duane Moody for News Five.”

Businessman my @$$. a scoundrel loser who could not get girls normally and he knows it. Fool had the ring and still hung around the scene like he could do it over? what an idiot. and how he still has access to Facebook? a whole family of wanna be’s and losers who think they are something when they only fool themselves and believe their own lies-the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

  2. Bzeinmiami says:

Is he by chance related to MALCOME VASQUES

  3. HAPPY says:

    GOD IS GOOD!

AND I AM SO PROUD OF THE PEOPLE IN SAN IGNACIO, FOR TAKING A STAND, AND NOT KEEPING QUIET. I PRAY THAT THIS CONTINUES THROUGH OUT THE WHOLE OF BELIZE…..IF IT DOES, A CHANGE WILL COME! BUT YOU CANT BE AFRAID TOO STAND UP FOR WHATS RIGHT!

  4. jeeboo says:

Maybe Belize City folks can learn from this.

  5. MADDYVANDIJKDEREALISTO says:

The plot’s pretty simplistic and straight forward here to secure justice in this case the public need to haul Vasquez @$$ out of the police jail and lynch his sick @$$ right on the nearest bridge.

Enough is enough, and a mob justice is better than no justice at all.

If the public took a stand years ago it could have saved those other young girls or children throughout Belize that was brutally raped and murdered and in the same way Jasmine was raped and murdered.

  6. cayobway says:

now this is the san ignacio and santa elena i grew up in, back in the day we did not put up with jerks from out of town, if you came in and mess up you will be dealt with, kudos to my people from cayo big up!!!!

  7. RadicalBelizean says:

I wish people would try to find this individual’s relative why is it necessary to know he related to?

I am not related in any way to this man but I really thing it is unfair – as `you can choose your friends but not your family unfortunately`.

I am glad that we have a suspect in custody, but I wonder if you are going to look into other unresolved cases involving our young children. After all he seems to travel the length and breadth of Belize under the guise of a “businessman” instead of a paedophile/possible child murderer (Innocent until proven guilty).

I would like to commend the people of San Ignacio for their real sense of “community”, Belize city residents take note we need to eradicate our city of the despicable, pointless, worthless so called ‘human’ that are destroying our country.

  8. Elgin Martinez says:

Go Gina Tillett you’ve got more cohones than the GOB.Last but not least kudos to the people of San Ignacio and Santa Elena.

  9. DonPepe says:

Proud of my Cayo people and felt good being a part of it, that was a huge crowd out there yesterday more than when the 10th or the 21st is celebrated, it was for a worthy cause, JUSTICE. If they court don’t lock him up for good, he won’t live for long.

  11. islander says:

I am very PROUD OF CAYO PEOPLE, this is how the citizenry should react to crime and criminals….

Unfortunately Belize City is such a disgraceful place that when the Police get heavy handed with murderers and rapists people from all walks of life attack the Police…

QUICK QUESTION……WHERE THE !@@# ARE THE HUMAN RIGHTS PEOPLE????? JASMINE LOWE WAS AN INNOCENT 13 YEAR OLD SCOUT THAT WAS ROBBED OF HER RIGHT TO LIFE BUT I DO NOT SEE THOSE SLEEVE SCUM ATTORNEYS THAT CLAIM TO BE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS…

The only time you see the so called “Human Rights attorney is when murderers and criminals get a kick in the @$$ by the Police or a law abiding citizen shoots a thief”….

That female attorney need to change the name of her organization to ” CRIMINALS RIGHTS GROUP”…where the !@#$ are they, when little kids rights to life are being taken away by the scum they protect…

  15. Al says:

I am so proud of the people who have stood up and say no more will we be held hostage to this crime wave. I hope the people in the city of Belixe is taking notice and will stand up and do the same thing and let the criminals know they are taking their freedom and peace back. Stop living in fear, let the criminals fear you the people. While you are protesting demand law reform, from a legal system that protects the rights of the criminals to one that is for justice to the people. Power to the people.

Read more here about the Jasmine Lowe Effect.

  17. Lucas says:

I understand that some Belize City little girls went missing as far back as some years ago. Could this man be the culprit?. I think the police should reopen these cases and see if there is any connection to this S.O.B. I SAY: TO HELL WITH THE ANTI-DEATH PENALTY PEOPLE. HANG THE ………

  18. RadicalBelizean says:

I meant to say in my earlier post that I wish people would NOT ask about his relatives. No one is responsible for the actions of their family members.

This man should have gone to prison last year Jan 2011, but the soft justice meant he was free to carry out further acts against our young women and children.

  19. Pelican says:

Sorry, Gina Tillett – mek dem know..

  20. taurus says:

    well said islander…so true.

  21. Laz says:

I would really appreciate if no lawyer picks this case like how they did with Rodwell Williams let him rot in jail

  22. alley cat says:

Even Rod is showing respect and not posting his usual political stuff. Thank Rod!!

  23. IHEAR SOMETALKS says:

    THANKS YOU ISLANDER.

  24. Analys says:

this is a good oportunity for the news station or independent journalists to dig a little deeper, than just reporting events. bring out his criminal history, look for his former girlfriends, discuss the profile of a sexual predator. why is there a sex offenders list in many countries and not in Belize.

  25. Sasha says:

There is enough evidence to hold him behind bars for now, different licence plate & Jasmine ring, GO CAYO PEOPLE, let these FOOLS know we won’t put up with no criminals, you can solve these crimes without police. HOW COMES WE DIDN’T HEAR EARLIER ABOUT THE OTHER 11 GIRLS? Belizeans stop protecting your CRIMINALS FRIENDS OR RELATIVE.

  26. jungle says:

I know that every body is watching things happen and we want justice and we want these criminals to be hang by the neck or put them to jail and forget about them, but this does not happen, BELIZEANS lets wake up, the Barrow goverement does not do any thing at all, and I want to say the NO ATTORNEY SHOULD DEFEND CRIMINALS LIKE THIS ONE, DO NOT DEFFEND CRIMINALS FOR THE LOVE OF MONEY, MR. BARROW, PUT THESE CRIMINALS TO HANG BY THEIR NECK, DO NOT RELEASE THEM FROM JAIL, I MEAN ALL CRIMINALS

  27. Storm says:

I hope this energy can be used to form a permanent citizen patrol group to fight crime independently, and to help police as in this case.

And I hope the spirit can spread out of Cayo to every other city, town, and village in the country. I know Corozal civic leaders have a similar idea.

The proper goal of justice is to protect the innocent and punish the guilty, and it need not come only from the courts.

  28. lili says:

i’m from santa elena and we cayo and santa elena people we no accept those kind of mada $#!%
from no one especially an outsider, i say hang him under the the bridge and everyone takes a shot at his naked @$$ until he is dead, dead, dead. and through him him in the ocean there is no space for people like those in our wonderful land to burry his @$$.

  29. impartial says:

We have to learn from the people in Cayo…

  30. chava says:

Lucas you asked a question that has been on my mind.
Is this Man RESPONSIBLE for the disappearance of Andrea Saragosa’s daughter that went missing in Belize City over a year ago?
How long ago did those little girls go missing? There was a series of murders that seemed to have been a trend. Was this man too young back then to have done it?
    He is sick!
I am PROUD of the people of the Cayo District. We need more response like this. We NEED to stand up and take Belize back. Work together as a community. Look out for your neighbors.
The POLICE can not do it on their own. Let’s not be BLAMING or pointing Fingers. Let’s MAKE A DIFFERENCE and stand together. “WE THE PEOPLE”

  32. alley cat says:

Every single gov. has faced pressure and push back from mainly European Countries in regards to executions. This may also be an oppurtunity for the gov. to educate the public on how this pressure is applied and what kind of funding and support we could possibly loose out on and let us make that choice some how.
