Dignity and Human Rights Campaigners join protest

Ivan Garcia

Doctors, nurses and health professionals protested the murder of the doctor at midday. They were joined by members of the We Are One in Dignity and Human Rights Campaign. This afternoon, the organization issued a statement expressing indignation against “the unprosecuted crimes being perpetrated against those vulnerable to violence, such as women, children, and sexual minorities, and LGBT persons.” The organization points to an OAS resolution on human rights to which Belize is committed to investigate possible hate crimes, condemn acts of violence, and strengthen its national institutions “with a view to preventing and investigating these acts and violations and ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice.”

But their is no leader in the country how is anything going to change we need to change things ourselves as you see with all that has been going on in the country. Not a word from this gov. Or pm is it that they are ashamed of the way they are running the country or is it that they just don’t give a damn about what’s happening.

Where were all these Doctors and Nurses prior to the murder of this Doctor. What’s up with the double standard? Why isn’t thesame attention given to the murder of innocent Belizeans who are not from the so called affluent communities? This is the reason why the crime situation in the Jewel can’t be solved. The people are divided, the only thing that’s going to bring a resolution to this crime situation is unity.Wake up Belize.

Not really Elgin.. when it happpens home of course its human nature and normal for it to have an effect when you see it daily and daily in the same location and group of people. Of course, there is a reality of double standard that we all need to face and be realistic even though it hurts. When crime and gangs kill each other and hold the rest of the country hostage and they want nothing better for them, then we need to deal with it decisively to send the message that it will not be tolerated. When violent crime hits innocent law abiding, tax paying, harworking, contributing to societies well being and sacrificing to make a change in our country, THEN, although it looks like double standard you have to be naive or dumb not to see a difference. Hardworking and law abiding citizens pay when the criminals get shot and to maintain them in jail , alleviation projects through our tax dollars beacuse government seems to make them feel that he pays it but government does not make money, he spends the money of the law abiding citizens paid through taxes. handouts will not help criminals its tough criminal laws. stop maing them feel the victims.. Make a census and ask arounnd the country how many were poor and hard work brought them out of it.. go ahead and look further than your knows want you to smell..

I guess Elgin Martines wants people to march when a gangbanger is killed… or better yet, all hospitals staff go out and protest everything one of those good for nothing gets killed. Double standard?? yours is the only double standard: you say and do nothing about violence and then complain when a group in our society protest against the killing of a law abiding citizen. SHUT UP!!!

  5. Elgin Martinez says:

@impartial: I guess you need a reading comprehension and a spelling class.Where in my statement did i mention of wanting people to march when a gangbanger is killed? My point is that their is a double standard in the Jewel as it relates to crime. If you’re from the so called afluent communities justice is swift. On the other hand if your’re poor you might not even get justice and tha’s a fact. And i stand by my statement.

  6. Elgin Martinez says:

@Tanya:I guess you are the naive or dumb one, because smart people don’t refer to other people as dumb or naive because they have different views on an issue.Furthermore there are many hard working Belizeans who has been killed as a result of the crime situation. As a result stop acting like this Doctor is the only one who has met his demise as a result of the crime wave in the Jewel.Innocent Belizeans are being killed everyday. The only reason this case is getting the attention it’s getting is because it’s someone from the affluent community that has being murdered.United we stand divided we fall.

  7. YesMan says:

  8. Analys says:

I think Elgin has a high paying government job, singing for his supper.
