FIFA instructor Gary Stempel in Belize

Gary Stempel

The highly-respected FIFA Instructor Gary Stempel arrived in Belize today; he was received by a representative of the Executive of the Football Federation of Belize.  Stempel coached the Panamanian under-twenty and under-twenty-three teams to qualify for its first ever U-twenty World Cup in 2003. He will be conducting a rigorous training session with about thirty coaches from across the country. The participating coaches, who will be FIFA qualified at the end of the course, will learn the latest techniques and drills to pass on to their respective football clubs. According to Stempel, Belize’s athletes have great potential and a higher level of coaching can open doors for opportunities on the international scene.

Gary Stempel, FIFA Instructor

“It’s an eight day course divided into practical work where we have a specific course program, showing the latest techniques of coaching at high levels,; international level and obviously there’s also a large part of theory where we study things like match analysis, systems of play, and other aspects of football. FIFA is really just trying to put more emphasis now on football in Belize, trying to help it move along and this is the beginning of what I’m told is going to be a few other courses.”

“The training; will it be, I guess, physically intensive or what can they expect?”

Gary Stempel

“Well, they can expect a tough time. It will be nine days of hard work. We start at nine o’clock in the morning; we finish around seven o’clock at night. It’s a full day program for eight days and it will be very, very intensive with the emphasis on practical work; coaching, on field coaching, eleven v eleven, different drills, all the different attacking principles, defending principles will all be applied. So it’s a very intensive course and they better be prepared for a lot of hard work.”

“And from what you know of football in Belize, what kind of potential do you see here?”

Gary Stempel

“I’ve brought national teams here, I’ve coached Panama so I’ve been to Belize—I think this is my second or third time that I’ve been here. I think this is a country that has vast potential, potential that perhaps in the football world hasn’t been exploited to the maximum. And hopefully, this is something that could actually get—we know that there’s a new federation starting to set up a new administration, they seem to be very committed in trying to progress and trying to educate and train the coaches and making sure that football here in Belize starts to grow because the potential you have, it’s just a question of making sure that potential gets the opportunities.”
