Cayo mechanic shot by Guatemalan assassins

Shortly after ten this morning a Cayo resident was shot during what appears to be an assassination attempt. Cecilio Gregorio, a mechanic, was confronted by two men who were pretending to look for a job, one of them pulled out a gun and fired two shots at him. Luckily, he survived. According to Senior Superintendent Chester Williams, the Officer in Charge of the San Ignacio Police Formation, the cops and Cayo residents went in pursuit of the men who are believed to be Guatemalan nationals.

Sr. Supt. Chester Williams, O.C., San Ignacio Police

Chester Williams

“The persons involved were on a motorcycle fleeing down Bullet Tree Road. The police went in the area of Bullet Tree; all the way to Clarissa Falls that we also have some members of the community who also helped in their own private vehicle. We remained in contact with these persons who were pursuing the gunmen. They subsequently went down that road where there is an open border area with Belize and Guatemala and they crossed over into Guatemala on their motorcycle. As a result of that, we were unable to pursue any further. We have subsequently detained in relations to Mister Cecilio that these persons came to his shop, they asked for him and they showed him. One approached him asking if he had any vacancy for employment. Simultaneously while he was telling them no, the said male person took out what appeared to be a point thirty-eight revolver and fired two shots—one of which caught him in one of his shoulder. He was taken to the San Ignacio Town Hospital and subsequently transferred to the K.H.M.H. in a stable condition. Injuries, based on what we are told, are not life threatening. I personally communicated with him by phone. He spoke quite well.”

Jose Sanchez

“Does this seem to be an attempted hit on this man’s life? It doesn’t sound like a robbery.”

Sr. Supt. Chester Williams

“Well the motive based on what we observed does not appear to be a robbery. It more seems as if it might have been a hit because these people came from across the border to do this mission and go right back across border. So these are some of the issues that we encounter in the San Ignacio/Benque Area where we have border criminals coming across to our country and commit crimes and then go back into their country.”

Jose Sanchez

“Have you been able to speak or intend to speak with your Guatemalan counterparts?”

Sr. Supt. Chester Williams

“We have not been able to make direct communication with them, but we are in the process of doing so. There are certain protocols that we must follow and those will be followed in order for us to ensure that we do what is right to get these people back. But first and foremost we need to get an identity; need to get names.”

So between Friday and Monday, two persons were killed and seven others were shot and injured.

Where’s the border security? It’s a shame for these Guatemalans to cross over the Belize border to commit crimes for a little bit of money. They got no fear nor respect for the belizean people, its scary to know living in belize that you can get robbed or lose your life and nothing will come from it. The police officer always doing investigation they can never catch no one. Belize worst mistake was to gain independence, its Quite clear these numb skull don’t know how to run a country.

  2. Storm says:

Hooray for our open border! Guats can export their beefs and violence to our streets, as if we don’t have enough home-grown violence!

  3. Rod says:

This will also get much worse and this gov. Cannot handle even murders in the city much less cross border murders .

  4. Joe says:

So in other words, our borders are just free for immigrants to come over to either rub or murder us. Thank you GOB for that sense of security. For all we know, Jasmine Lowe murderer could be from Guatemala. A free open road access to Belize without security……what next….better they say Belize is for Guatemala…they already can come and go as they please

  5. Nova says:

The Road to Bullet tree has a police Check point, amazing the lack of poor police coordination.

  6. Truth says:

The ” open border area with Belize and Guatemala” the officer mentions is one if not the same one where there is a police station right over the bridge.. and they do nothing …. There have been many many trucks full of cattle’s being crossed through that same route and the officers seem to be in it too. have seen the persons going into the police station with a paper and then go.. where is BAHA for sure that’s not legal what is happening there.. many a times peoples from Bullet tree have called on the radio and still nothing changes.. sometimes there are 4-6 trucks parked on the other side of the bridge waiting for the police booth to go sleep so they can pass. Know if those trucks can pass how could the killers not pass.. just imagine what else isn’t being passed and nothing is done about it. No matter how many times the people call radio stations

  7. Elgin Martinez says:

The Guats are aware of the fact that our system is a joke and that our border is open to all like a buffet house.Shame on our leaders.

  8. Ren says:

Actually 2 police booths. The one in San Ignacio by the junction to Santiago Juan layout- empty booth. Doors and windows totally destroyed. The one in Bullet Tree where the said BDFs manning that booth are if not sleeping until 9 am- are forever texting on their phone and the Guatemalan trucks, full of cattle are all lined up further down the road. We know that there are many incidents happening in that area of the country that go unreported. Contraband is always flowing, however, our leaders, security ministers and all whose job we taxpayers pay them to get done turn a blind eye. These are the small things that when ignored, turn into bigger problems.

Nice job security minister- we are the laughing stock of the region. Open borders that criminals just drive in and out killing our own….only in Belize!

  9. Belizean Pride says:

thank you TRUTH for saying again what i’ve been saying long time before how porous is our border near this bullet tree area along the el pilar. countless time we see trucks coming full of cattle, carrying bags of sugar previously but where are the police patrol? the booth is left unattended on the bullet tree rd. and never seem to be so important.

  10. now i see says:

Drug deal that went bad. Inmigration only harrass inocent people that cross with pasport and visa because they know that they cant get mordidas.

  11. NoNo says:

Then news said assasin! meaning they get pay to kill. and i’m sure they come in llegaly with pasport and everything jus like everyone else who comes to visit. So imigration can never tell if they are assasins or not. And come on people its our same Belizean people that go hire these assasins, thats common sense. Thou yes this gov is doing a shity job in running the country, they can’t really be blame for assins, because immigration officers can’t tell who is an assisin with all the guats that come in daily.

  12. blackberry says:

And we are receiving machines to upgrade passports ! People from across the borders like the zetas and MS13 do not need passport to come into Belize to commit crime. what we need is the WILL and enough force to seal the border.

  13. check it out says:

SEDI ELRINGTON” Our borders with Guatemala are artificial” UDP Minister of Foreign Affairs.

  14. joe says:

CATTLE CROSSING AND CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL GOING WITHOUT ANY NOTICING (WHO IS GETTING PAID) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BELIZE LAND OF THE FREE FOR GUAT.

  15. Ladymatura says:

hey but they had motocycles.. did these have Belize or Guatemalan licenses plate? if Belizean then they have local connections. Also all of Guatemala knows we took our BDF from off the border patrols and put them on the streets to fight crime… sorry but I do not think this is the smartest strategy. and what about the joint meetings held monthly by our security officials and the Guatemalan officials – they cannot come up with a plan on how we deal with these cross-border cirmes? but maybe some of us can come together and provide solutions and lend support since we are talking about the security of us all. Sadly, our government has made many wrong decisions – not only now but decades ago… we did not plan for today and so we are all going to feel the consequence… so let us be proactive.

  16. BMNJ says:

A western version of the ‘Great Wall of China’ will definitely go a very long way. We just need Uncle Sam to fund this project because all in the name of Narcotic Trafficking.

  17. Sasha says:

ROD since you know the situation & yu have the solution why don’t you get yourself elected & you can run the country.

  18. MadDOG says:

suggestion why not put a camara on that police station in bullet tree of more close to the road where all these people access to go to guatemala through Santa Rosa Ect… some kind a check -point there. why have those lazy BDF just sleeping there and flirting around to stand up on the road as a check point … and i hope that they aren’t bribed by these people , who use these road for contraband ( cow,scrap-metal ect.. who n=knows rugs)

  19. Think Belizeans says:

I done see white Foreigners will come and run our country.

  20. MadDOG says:

    Drugs sorry

  21. now i see says:

@BMNJ OR LIKE THE FENCE THEY HAVE AT THE BORDER WITH MEXICO AND THE USA.

  22. BMNJ says:

Now i see, you definitely know what I’m talking about. I hope PM Barrow knows what I’m talking about.

  23. Storm says:

Some good ideas here, and it appears there’s one topic we all agree about: THE BORDER NEED TO BE SECURE!

I like the idea of 24-hour camera surveillance, for people entering AND LEAVING.

I actually would like to see officers taking a good look at those who leave as well as those who come — it’s not hard to visit the Jewel to kill, rob, or do drug business, then cross back to freedom where our police cannot touch them in Mexico or Guatemala.

  24. Elgin Martinez says:

TheGOB has fail in every aspect crime, jobs, housing, healthcare and the list goes on.Last but not least the GOB has a responsibility as it relate to the safety of the Belizean people from both foreign and domestic enemy. As a result i can’t understand why some people on this blog refuse to accept that the GOB has a resposibility in currbing crime.

  25. Concern Belizean abroad says:

Every week I read the Belize news and there it is, more murder and crimes are commited not only by foreigners, but most murder are commited by Belizean themself and it’s a darm shame! What most people fail to realize is that it hurts the tourism industry and that’s money taken away and jobs for the country. Is it that the economy doing so well that they really don’t need tourist? if so then Belize will be the first country ever to turn a blind side to tourist. I say forget about the Commossioner of police and the Prime Minister, they seems to care about one thing and that’s their pocket!
Belizean should be out in numbers to fight for the good of this country.

  26. Belizean Pride says:

oh we forgot chester said that statistics show we are better in less crime, I wonder in which wonderland is he living? typical police officer in charge. always wants to show the other side of the raw situation we are living. and if ask, he might say he had no knowledge of such activities going and and would ask the public to help cause his buddies are flirting with young girls on the twin towns while cruising in the police pickup all wreck up already.

  27. pandreal says:

@ now i see….its amazing u act do competent yet you cant spell. Why u put your chisme ina everything? You know what dem seh when u assume right? Well prob not. Stop be judge and jury, give the correct story time fu come out.
Oh and a fence? We cant even fix our streets and you think we can build a fence. Dont be riduculous. I hate when ppl just talk fi talk. We d hell we wah get di money?

  28. JahKid says:

On _______ acting upon information, the police, this and that, blah, blah, blah, blah. That is chester williams, mouth service. He has a big mouth and uses it well. He should be in Seine Bight looking after his big house, San Ignacio is too big for him and his brains are shallow. Police vehicles are in tatters, every time there are check points, especially at night The Police Department would pay the most fines for traffic lights offences. These vehicles are not serviced nor appreciated. They just drive and drive and drive until they are no good. Men we in shambles. People we need to organize our selves and take real actions against crime. Only thing we might become criminals too and we will be shot down quick. Not like the criminals by trade who do all kinds of offences and still walk free. Have mercy Lord.
