Orange Walk Businessman murdered. A hit?

Sunil Punjabi

The past weekend was the bloodiest since the beginning of the year and there was no relief on Monday when another murder took place in the crime ridden City. Then on Tuesday night in Orange Walk Town, a store owner was killed as he tended to customers in his grocery shop. The family of Sunil Punjabi does not believe the homicide was motivated by robbery. So what was the motive? News Five’s Andrea Polanco reports.

Andrea Polanco, Reporting

Today a single black bow sits above the closed shutters of Lucky Grocery Store on Guadeloupe Street in Orange Walk Town. Owner, forty-four year old Sunil Punjabi was standing behind the counter when a single gunman, dressed in black, walked in and fatally shot him in the face.

Mukesh Punjabi, Brother of the Deceased

“I nuh have no idea because I was right here in my shop when one of my friend call me that they come and shot your brother and when I reach right there I find him dead.”

Andrea Polanco

“So all of that happened outside the store or inside?”

Mukesh Punjabi

“Inside the store; inside the store.”

Andrea Polanco

“He was alone at the time?”

Mukesh Punjabi

Mukesh Punjabi

“There were two customers inside and they push one of the persons and the next one gone inside to get some stuff and then they just shoot him; that’s it.”

Mukesh Punjabi says that his brother had been operating on number twelve Guadeloupe Street for over ten years. This is the first time any sort of attack was made against him. He says the motive doesn’t appear to be robbery.

Andrea Polanco

“The motive, was it robbery?”

Mukesh Punjabi

“No, they just come inside and shoot him. That’s it.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, they didn’t take anything from the store?”

Mukesh Punjabi

“Nothing. Nothing.”

Andrea Polanco

“In recent weeks, prior to his murder, did he tell you if anybody threatened him or anything like that?”

Mukesh Punjabi

“Never because we never mess around with nobody. We only do our work and that’s it; nothing else.”

Andrea Polanco

“How long did you brother have his business over there?”

Mukesh Punjabi

“Hmm…more than ten years.”

Andrea Polanco

“And in all of the ten years he never encountered anyone who would want to kill him?”

Mukesh Punjabi

“Never, never, never because we are not that kind of persons. We never mentioned to do harm to anybody in our life and in future also we will never dream to harm anybody in our life. Our motto is to work, that’s it.”

Andrea Polanco

“Okay, was he robbed any time prior to this incident; neither?”

Mukesh Punjabi

“Never in his life. That happened first time and it gone very bad.”

Mukesh says while they don’t believe it was a robbery gone bad, they really don’t know why Sunil was killed.

Mukesh Punjabi

“I don’t know why that happened and who do it because we don’t mess around with nobody. We try help everybody If possible and if not possible we tell them sorry, that’s it. We only have our motto which is to work, that’s it. Why that happened, I don’t understand.”

And with this recent murder of one of the Indian Community’s businessman, Mukesh says they expect to take peaceful action:

Mukesh Punjabi

“Our Indian Community they plan to close and have a protest against these things that is happening in our country. So let’s see what will be the process because today in the afternoon we will have a meeting for that.”

Police say the gunman made good his escape on a bicycle. Reporting for News Five, I’m Andrea Polanco.

Sunil Punjabi is the second Orange Walk businessman to be murdered this year; Rodulfo Pererra was gunned down as he arrived at his house on Cinderella Street back on January seventh.

I hope the killer can be identified and eliminated from our streets. Motive doesn’t matter, but murderers must be killed.
