MS-13 has firm roots in the Capital

On the heels of that damning report of Belize City being on the top most hated cities, is another international article about organized criminal activity in our backyard. La Prensa Grafica, a newspaper in El Salvador has reported that ruthless Salvadoran gangs are moving into Belize.  The article says that over the past decade, the country’s two largest gangs, the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and the Barrio Eighteen have both increased their presence in the capital city, Belmopan. According Prensa Grafica, in the wider Cayo District, an unnamed Salvadoran gang with around four hundred members also operates with impunity. The newspaper suggests that the use of the Commercial Free Zone in Corozal for contraband smuggling may also have contributed to the increased gang activity in Belize. Smugglers take advantage of the cheap prices to make a profit and it could open the door for more serious organized criminal activity. The report cites the truce between thirteen local gangs, which resulted in a decrease in violent crimes last year, but is now fracturing. It also notes that Belize’s murder rate has since climbed to about forty per hundred thousand people, surpassing Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica and Guatemala.

  3. Storm says:

Did they forget to look at PG? Let’s face it, south to north, west to east, foreign gangs affiliated to cartels are present and do what they want.

WITH ANY DECENT GOVERNMENT, IT SHOULD BE EASIER TO DEAL WITH FOREIGN GANGSTERS THAN OUR HOMEGROWN ONES, BECAUSE THEY CAN BE DEPORTED WITHOUT HAVING TO BE CONVICTED.

Oh, but I forgot. Our immigration officials are too busy selling visas in China.

Sorry, Jewel, you’ve been invaded, and your days are numbered.

  4. Concerned Citizen says:

The problem with these rootless …….. is that they will start taxing business and when they fail to pay up, they will be executed just like in Guatemala, Salvador and Honduras.

Just for clarity, if you research online you will see that the Mara Salvatrucha and Barrio 18 DID NOT originate in El Salvador but rather in the streets of Los Angeles and with the deportation of criminals back to their home countries, these scumbags in turn formed their local Mara Salvatrucha and 18 Street gangs.

With the pressures from the Mexican Government, the drug cartels moved into Guatemala and now the new Guatemalan Government has been putting pressure on the cartels too, its logical that the will move into Belize especially with our weak justice system and the high chance of getting off even from murder charge.

  5. now i see says:

Very true! The U.S. Train them and then send them back home.

  6. Al says:

I wonder how many of these MS13 and Barrio 18 have been given citizenship in this country that they have more power than the authorities. Before we hand out citizenship to just anybody, there should be an investigative process that takes place. Stop making people citizens for a while until this mess can be sorted out. I see a country that is failling to plan and when you fail to plan, guess what, yu get exactly what is happening now. Has anyone seen a one year government plan or a five year plan?. If there is no plan as to where the country is heading failure is and will be reaped. Wake up.

  7. Storm says:

    You’re right again, Al.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. [UCLA basketball coach John Wooden]

  8. cayobway says:

The problem is the unemployment Rate in Belize is malting many poor Hispanic Belizeans to join MS13 and 18Street .Others use it as a form of protection from the Belizean gangs which are mostly black .The Belizean government is too busy doing other things paying criminals and meeting with them in Belize city and he not seeing that people from other parts of the country are suffering.Alot of youths are educated but no job opportunities. the rest of the unemployed contraband gas, food to feed there children but the hostility of the Customs towards this people who trying to feed there kids is cruel. Some are shot and treated worst than gangsters.Poverty creat desperation especailly on the less prevelage once.Maras are like a virus and of the worst .The government need to attract companies for our Belizeans to get jobs more job opportunities because many of our own Belizean people ate joining this Maras.things in Belize dnt look promising do some thing with our Gangs in Belize and also with MS13ans Barrio 18 all of them are pest of our society .
