P.M. speaks candidly about wife’s heart

Dean Barrow

Prime Minister Dean Barrow returned on Thursday from Miami where his wife is recovering from heart complications related to her breast cancer treatment. On arrival, the PM spoke at length with the media at the Philip Goldson International Airport about the condition of Kim Simplis Barrow. While she has been released from the hospital, Simplis Barrow’s heart is still functioning at only ten to fifteen percent capacity and radiation therapy has been discontinued. According to the Prime Minister, while he is in Belize, his mother-in-law will be at her side. However, he said the doctors explained the difficulty of the situation that his family must now endure.

Dean Barrow

“While there is no cure for heart failure, we are told that the damage to the heart muscle—which is what the combination of the chemotherapy and the radiation caused—is possibly reversible to a degree. And the doctors are saying look; if she’s lucky and the heart function can get up from the ten to fifteen percent of capacity—where it now is—to about thirty percent; that makes things far more manageable. So that’s the hope that being young and in the normal course fairly strong; that that together with medication and time will help to at least reverse to some degree the damage which, I repeat, unfortunately can’t ever be cured. So that’s what we’re looking at.”

Jose Sanchez

“Who does she have there with her in terms of to give her support?”

Dean Barrow

“Well her mother came in on Monday. I was to come on Tuesday, but we needed to see the doctors on Tuesday and Wednesday and I wanted to know what the immediate, what the short-term prognosis would be. The chemotherapy doctor or the cancer doctor saw her yesterday morning and started her on this tamoxifen which as I said hopefully would keep the cancer at bay. The heart specialist saw her yesterday at about noon and he said that he is very pleased at home the medications are working and as I said, she looks extremely well. Still a little bit of fatigue, but the shortness of breath, the gasping for air is gone. And as I said, when they checked and did their soundings, it appears that the water is completely removed from the lungs and from around the heart. So that’s where we stand.”

It is planned that Simplis Barrow will return to Belize in the next few weeks for treatment by Doctor Adrian Coye.

Mr. PM we feel your pain and we sympathize with your personal loss; but let’s get real, you are not doing the job that you were elected to do.

Sickness and death is not something new. Mrs. Barrow is not the only Belizean suffering from cancer. However, she may be one of the few that does not have to worry about how her medical bill is going to get paid. Kudos to her!

So Mr. PM, what are you doing to improve medical and health conditions for thousands of Belizeans that cannot afford private medical insurance? You wanted the PM job ? We gave it to you. What do you give us in return? Excuses, sad stories and personal grief. You want grief? Try walking city streets after dark. You want excuses? Drive most city streets and pretend the potholes are not there. You want a sad story? Barrow duped Belizeans into reelecting him for a second term.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU UNCLE BENJI. THE PM CAN SURELY AFFORD TO FLY OUT OF BELIZE EVERYTIME HE NEEDS TO BE NEXT TO HIS WIFE, BUT COME ON GET THE MEDICAL FACILITIES IN BELIZE FOR OUR BELIZEAN THAT SURE CANT AFFORD THE CARE THEY NEED SO BADLY.

  5. Darn right says:

    UNCLE B…..you are darn right!

  6. End Of Days says:

Barrow, you were warned. We told you to do good by your Belizean people, but you decided that enough is not enough, and you get more and more greedy. Now the universe is serving you your karma. You are a multimillionaire now, and yet you still want more.

  7. proud belizean says:

OH shut up and think think think stop being political cause if you were Prime Minister and it was your woman in that shoes u wouldn’t be thinking of anything else but her. So stop your stupidness and be real. Thats Y there are ministers in each constituency to deal with problems. Anywayz no use fighting with SPOLT MILK(PUP)……

  8. Belizean Pride says:

with due respect mr. barrow, we understand your side but look at the BIG page in front of you we have a national crisis which is CRIME GOING ON VERY RAMPANT that you need to focus on options you can use to pull this issue under control. I admire your part being a good husband beside your ailing wife nicely done, but we have a father/mother situation in grief which keep multiplying because of crime being done on kids, our Belizean kids, what are your plans PM?

  9. drose flowers says:

SOME OF YOU CAN REALLY BE SOUR GRAPES, SOMEDAY YOUR OWN WORD WILL FALL RIGHT BACK IN YOUR FACE.

  10. 100 % BELIZEAN says:

We need to keep poplitics out of this. I see a man trying to do all he can do for his wife. Prayers and blessings out to him and his wife. Come on people, show some support.

    Nero fiddled while Rome burns

  12. COLDWORLD says:

there is nothing wrong with being there for your wife, however, he is also PRIME MINISTER.
yes his wife is sick, but his country his running wild!!! he still has a country that HE is in charge of. yes, everybody does play a part, and is should be working together, but he has the ability to call, many shots, and put things together to help belize, as prime minister….how many people arent going through?????? many people are going through hard times, but that dont mean that they should LET GO of there house hold, and let it run out of control. Everybody has a resposibilty!! Perhaps maybe if its too much for him, he should step down!!!

  13. Kaila says:

I agree with Coldworld, that the Prime Minister should step down. Also the Bible says that one shouldn’t remarry unless the spouse is dead and Louis Barrow is very much alive who know maybe this happen because God noh like Ugly.

  14. Eye in the Sky says:

Good thing he can afford to travel back and forth to Miami. I can not even afford to go the private doctor and have to rely on a joke of a clinic.

  15. EvEnInGsTaR says:

The P.M. will not step down. He is too greedy and arrogant to admit that he cannot successfully take care of his wife and come up with proper ways to stablize the situation in this country at the same time.
