Teaching adults to be parents

Annie Palacio

A workshop geared towards strengthening parental aptitude will be held on Saturday at the ITVET Building in Belize City.  The seminar, according to organizer, Annie Palacio of Belize Kids First, is necessitated because of the current social decay, a problem she attributes to a lack of proper child-rearing.  The three-hour discussion will feature an American presenter, currently residing in Belize, who is experienced in parental and coping skills.

Annie Palacio, Founder, Belize Kids First

“The workshop is a parental workshop that will be held at the ITVET compound from nine until twelve o’clock.  The facilitator will be Mrs. Denise Lopez, she’s an American who’s been living in Belize for about three years and well versed in parental and coping skills.  We found the need, especially through my organization, that our family is the structure and unfortunately we are seeing nowadays that our family is falling apart by the high crime rate, the number of students and young people who are in the courts.  So our organization came together and we decided that we needed to do something to help to bring back the family structure.  One part of that is a parental workshop which will be teaching about strategies, techniques and about skills to be better parents.”

“In terms of a registration or in terms of the attendance of this particular workshop, how does that work?”

Annie Palacio

“Well we’re looking at doing it as a part one and part two.  We’re looking at at least forty people right now, the training room can only hold [that amount] at ITVET at the moment, at least thirty-five to forty people for tomorrow.  Registration will be at 8:30 a.m., it starts exactly at nine and it will be ending at twelve.  We’re asking anyone to, you can come in and register at that time or you can contact me at 662-3719 and I will get the registration to you or the email address is acuvas@yahoo.com and I could email it to you.”

“How critical is this particular type of forum in terms of being able to impart certain key pieces of information that would be used to keep the family structure intact, seeing the rampant crime and seeing, as you mentioned, kids going through the criminal justice system?”

Annie Palacio

“Oh I think it’s very vital to the development of our country.  Most of our youths that are dying are those, if you look at the statistics, that were born in 1981 and those are the ones either dying or killing.  Who will there be left to run this country?  So it is a critical part of our development but it’s also an outlet for many of us who may not know where else to go.”

All parents are invited to attend the free workshop and are encouraged to provide a small donation to Belize Kids First.
