Santi’s Shores Education Center on Kelly Street

Kelly Street, off Freetown Road, is transforming. Known for sporadic bursts of violence, there is a brand new facility that will provide opportunities for the youth of the area and the extended Caribbean Shores. An education centre was inaugurated this afternoon; the ribbon was symbolically cut by four government ministers.  News Five’s Jose Sanchez reports.

In days gone by, politicians would build a basketball court and that would be considered neighborhood development. But in Caribbean Shores, the area representative has constructed an education center with computers, internet and a school warden for neighborhood youths.

Santiago Castillo

Santiago Castillo, Minister of State in Min. of Economic Development

“It was only about fifty percent completed when I got elected and I decided to make it my first project. I’ll start by telling you that we named it the Deon Rowland Education Center for a young man who was an unsung hero in this area who used to work with the kids and lost his life to violence. We finished it; it didn’t have stairwell, we put the steps in, we encased the inside and I owe a great deal of gratitude to B.T.L. who donated six computers free of charge with free internet service. The idea is for the kids of this area. We also got, thankfully through the Ministry of Education, a school warden who will look after it at three p.m. in the afternoon till about seven and it is for kids in primary and secondary school to be assisted with their home work. We are going to limit them to an hour each on the computer because there are only six. We put in a basketball court so that kids in the area could play basketball in the afternoons, but that’s the idea of this center.”

Jose Sanchez

“Okay. How much funding have gone into getting this project completed?”

Santiago Castillo

“I spent twenty thousand dollars of my own money to finish it and previous to that, obviously, there was already money pumped into it.”

Jose Sanchez

“Clearly there has to be some sort of recurring funds to keep the longevity, to keep this place open.”

Santiago Castillo

“Well for my community vote is what I’ll pay electricity, other expenses. But as I’ve said, thankfully the internet service is free of charge and the Ministry of Education is providing us with a school warden for the center.”

The project began with former area rep. Carlos Perdomo and Minister Santiago Castillo carried the project to completion.  And with the cutting of a ribbon, the Caribbean Shores Education Center was officially opened.

Santiago Castillo

“My hope bwai Jose is that within the next five years—I have four polling areas—is to do three more in the next three areas. So after the five-year term, there is one for each—that is my dream where education is concern. You should also know Jose that in the next two-three months; we are going to start the Buttonwood Drainage Project that will stretch from Buttonwood downward at a value of one million dollars for the Caribbean Shores Area. So I am presenting to the Caribbean Shores voters, you included, that in two months I’m already starting to work for Caribbean Shores.”
