Assailant who attacked Hofius Manager is charged for assault

Kirk Nicholas

Well-known Belize City businesswoman Jacqueline Roe, the Manager of Hofius Ltd., was allegedly attacked by a knife-wielding assailant while walking towards Swing Bridge on Tuesday.  Fortunately, several passersby came to her rescue.  Her attacker, who has since been identified as forty-five year old Kirk Nicholas, was later arrested and appeared in court today where he was read a single charge of aggravated assault.  Nicholas appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer where he pleaded not guilty.  The court prosecutor, as a result of Nicholas’ behavior, requested a psychiatric evaluation to determine whether he can stand trial.  Nonetheless, he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison where the evaluation will be conducted.  According to Roe, she was walking in front of Hofius in the direction of the bridge when Nicholas advanced towards her with a knife.  Fearful of her life she used her bag to protect herself from him and that’s when onlookers came to her aid.  In court Roe also testified that it is not the first time she has been accosted by Nicholas.  He is scheduled to return to court on July fifth where he will appear before Magistrate Hettie-Mae Stewart.
