Prison Officer tries to smuggle marijuana into prison

Amir Reyes

Nim Li Punit and the New River are but only a sample of locations where marijuana occasionally turns up. But there is one place that smugglers regularly get caught; believe it or not, it’s the Belize Central Prison. Prison officers are occasionally accused of trying to smuggle weed into the Prison.  And on Monday night, another prison officer, twenty-seven year old Amir Reyes was caught red-handed in the daring act as three hundred and twenty-four grams marijuana were almost infiltrated into the facility. The drugs were stashed inside a dish with homemade food he took with him from home to work the night shift. A search of the container by prison officials led to the discovery of the weed and this morning, Reyes appeared before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith and was read a single charge of drug trafficking. Reyes was offered bail of one thousand dollars—five hundred to be paid in cash and five hundred in a signed surety. He was also ordered to stay away from the Belize Central Prison and he is to report to the Orange Walk Police Station every Monday until the case ends.

Few things are worse than a dirty cop.

I strongly recommend that we have a law that requires all police convicted of crime to serve DOUBLE the maximum sentence called for civilians.

It is so sad when you cannot trust the ones who are put incharge of watching the prisoners. I say let him spend sometime in the joint for being stupid. Instead of looking longterm and securing his employment he took the shortcut to a hasty five cents. Is there any honest people left in Belize, I bet this is not the first time he took in this stuff, he has done it before and just not get caught. The honest men who work at the prison are overlooked for promotions, the crooks and buddies are the ones who are promoted.

Marijuana is usually measured in ounces….AND…haven’t we heard this story before…bet we will hear it again.

  5. CEO says:

Everyone in Belize seems to be a hustler! he just pissed his future away 11.5 ounces (here you go Charlie Price can you better relate to ounces rather than grams) of weed.

These guys should get the harshest sentencing because of the fact that they betrayed the public trust. These guys are the reason our country is where it is now.

Search some of the custum officers who are living way above their salary too!

  6. Charlie Price says:
