Wild West; 6 shootings in Belize City
If you stayed in Belize City over the weekend, you would probably wonder if you were hearing the sounds of fireworks or maybe you already knew you lived in our version of the Wild West. After countless shots were heard across town, six persons in total were injured during several shooting incidents. Two of the six are still admitted at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in stable condition. The shootings started as early as Friday night when twenty-seven year old Honduran National, Edwin Mejia was on his way home when he was fired upon by a lone gunman and for what appears to be no apparent reason. News Five spoke with Police Press Officer Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood and asked him if the shootings were gang related.
“Were any of these shootings gang related; any at all?”
Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood
“Mister Moody, gang related; it depends. Some people out there might be saying these are gang-related shooting. But the one in particular with Mister Vasquez and Alex, it is apparently a misunderstanding; something that stemmed from a earlier misunderstanding. The one with Edwin Mejia who is a Honduran national is saying that he doesn’t even know his assailant. And the one with Glenford Young; again we cannot just label as gang related. We would want to detain the suspects in these shooting and try to get to the bottom of it.
The fourth of May we had a shooting where Edwin Mejia, twenty-seven years received two apparent gunshot wounds to the left hand. Our initial investigations revealed that Mejia was walking on Euphrates Avenue, saying he was heading home, when a lone gunman rode passed opened fire and causing his injuries.”
