Wild West; 6 shootings in Belize City

Fitzroy Yearwood

If you stayed in Belize City over the weekend, you would probably wonder if you were hearing the sounds of fireworks or maybe you already knew you lived in our version of the Wild West.  After countless shots were heard across town, six persons in total were injured during several shooting incidents. Two of the six are still admitted at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in stable condition. The shootings started as early as Friday night when twenty-seven year old Honduran National, Edwin Mejia was on his way home when he was fired upon by a lone gunman and for what appears to be no apparent reason. News Five spoke with Police Press Officer Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood and asked him if the shootings were gang related.

Duane Moody

“Were any of these shootings gang related; any at all?”

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

“Mister Moody, gang related; it depends. Some people out there might be saying these are gang-related shooting. But the one in particular with Mister Vasquez and Alex, it is apparently a misunderstanding; something that stemmed from a earlier misunderstanding. The one with Edwin Mejia who is a Honduran national is saying that he doesn’t even know his assailant. And the one with Glenford Young; again we cannot just label as gang related. We would want to detain the suspects in these shooting and try to get to the bottom of it.

The fourth of May we had a shooting where Edwin Mejia, twenty-seven years received two apparent gunshot wounds to the left hand. Our initial investigations revealed that Mejia was walking on Euphrates Avenue, saying he was heading home, when a lone gunman rode passed opened fire and causing his injuries.”

More GSU, more BDF, and trained citizen patrols are what we need in the City. We must not appease the gangs or surrender the streets, but we must continue to mobilize until they are crushed. Gangs are beginning to weaken, I believe, and now is the time to increase the force put against them, not reduce it.

I can’t believe this guy still has the nerve to give an interview he has been told so many lies to the belizean people it’s not even funny any more ,what do you expect when their is absolutely no leadership in the country people dying all over the place and the pm is in Miami shopping when are you going to wake up belizeans and say enough is enough get this pm and gov out they are as useless as tits on a bull now this year w3 double the murder rate as last year they are impotent on crime if not complicit wake up people .

    I have a solution…. Reality TV!!!!

Put all the known gang members in a huge great big cage created out it the bushes…. have them go at it lawlessly, no kidding, LAWLESSLY. NO RULES.

And then who ever wins, we shoot them for killing the others. Broadcast it live, 24 hrs, pay-per-view stylee. And then we use the money we get from this, to give to the inocent families that have been affected by all this stupidness.

don’t know what’s happening when the government start paying the gang members and not the special force BDF these people have families and are putting their life at risk, and still the BDF continue to do the best at their job .These shootings are out of hand especially when innocent people are involve.

Storm, Rod an Busha.. you are all correct and in one case a really good idea. It’s not possible however to have more GSU and Police working in Belize City because they are more interested in killing the investments, labor and business markets here in the country than going after the Gangs.. I used to think GSU was Gang Suppression Unit… Apparently it is now only used against Non-Gang targets such as John McAfee and other businessmen who invest and hire many good Belizeans. Perhaps if the businessmen hire gang members then the GSU would have a legitimate reason for existing… Rod has the situation correct.. Belizeans need to standup and be counted… Lack of involvement by the good citizens of Belize is killing this YOUR country..

SJ and Rod — I agree with your premise that Belizeans need to stand up. But right now it’s impossible to force a new election under the Constitution. In Belize there will never be a “no confidence” vote no matter how hellish things become, because there are only 2 parties sharing power.

So I think there are a few things to do until the tide has shifted politically.

    1. Keep the pressure on by speaking out and raising public awareness.

    2. Calling out the worst stuff when we see it, AND REMEMBERING IT for the next election.

    3. ORGANIZING

    3. ORGANIZING to campaign for honest, patriotic candidates with real platforms and goals for the next election.

And if all that fails, follow Busha’s suggestion and put the gangsters with the politicians in a steel cage until there is only one man standing. Then hang him.

I want to be a gang member when I grow up so the government pays me over $175 a week not to kill rob and maim persons. What a great life we have as gang members in Belize.

It should read: http://www.guardianangels.org . Sorry for my typo. but it’s a great organisation, and much needed in the Jewel.
