George Price Biography shortlisted for Award

It was announced a month ago that the book “George Price: A Life Revealed” had made it onto the long-list of ten titles in the region being considered for the prestigious 2012 One Caribbean Media Bocas Prize. Well, there’s good news tonight for Godfrey Smith, who authored the autobiography on the father of the nation. The shortlist was announced on Thursday and “George Price: A Life Revealed” is the winner in the non-fiction category and one of the top three books now competing for the award. The judges found the book to be a “well-crafted narrative that mixes affection and gratitude with something like awe” and they describe it as a “deft exploration of George Price’s “eccentric genius and political acumen”. It means that Smith is now a step closer to winning the prize of ten thousand US dollars sponsored by One Caribbean Media, the largest media house in Trinidad and Tobago. The other two finalists are Trinidadian playwright and short-story writer, Earl Lovelace who won the fiction category with his novel “Is Just A Movie” while Puerto Rican writer and professor Loretta Collins Klobah topped the poetry category with the collection entitled “The Twelve-Foot Neon Woman”. The overall winner will be announced on April twenty-eighth at the second annual NGC Bocas Lit Fest in Port of Spain.

I haven’t read the book as yet, but I don’t have to wait to do so before congratulating Godfrey Smith for this outstanding achievement and for showing forth what great talent we have here in Belize. I hope that, as in this case, Godfrey continues to focus his talents towards the greater glory of Belize.
