A Month of Activities for Women
The first of March marked the start of Women’s Month. This year it is being celebrated under the theme, ‘Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures’. For the entire month, the Women’s Department is carrying out a series of activities geared towards celebrating the achievements and highlighting the need for inclusion of women. At the start of their calendar, the department launched free fitness sessions at the Body 2000 Gym. Coupled with that, are numerous other sporting activities and educational sessions, aimed at shaping young girls into strong women. Cynthia Williams of the Women’s Department spoke to News Five about the next event, which will be a poetry competition this Saturday night and other activities planned for this month.

“We are inviting the general public, to one of the activities that we are hosting. It will be at the Birds Isle Restaurant, Saturday March tenth, it’s a poetry competition and it is a family event. We have sixteen entries for the competition, both males and females, different age ranges. And we are inviting the general public to bring their families. We will also be having our annual bike rally next week Saturday and that will actually be held throughout the country on the same day. So, we are inviting everyone, everywhere to be a part of the bike rally in their respective districts. We have been able to partner with several businesses that are providing many gifts towards the raffle for prizes after bike rally. We have football and softball marathon in Corozal on March twenty-fifth. We have our tennis tournament in Belmopan on March thirty-first; we have a volley ball competition in Punta Gorda as well. So we really try to include a variety of activity in terms of workshops and art exhibitions. This year specifically, we are including a lot of Maya Art because this is the year of the Mayas. In conjunction with that we will be having a Maya Women’s Expo on March twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth. And of course, we will have our Annual Women’s Summit on the twenty-second of March. This year we have our theme, ‘Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures,’ and so all the activities are geared towards the inclusion of girls, ensuring that we remember them as part of the discussion this time and not from when they are women, we feel that we need to empower them from now so that when the time comes for them to take the reign of our country’s development, they will be fully prepared.”
The Women’s Department will also be holding their Single Mother’s Expo this month. For more information on the calendar of events, you can contact Williams at the Women’s Department.
