Girl with facial tumor hospitalized

Catarina Ishim

On Tuesday, we aired the story of twelve year old Catarina Ishim, who is fighting an enormous tumor, which was detected in October, 2010. Catarina has undergone two surgeries but the abnormal growth has resurfaced for a third time. The child and her family are from the remote village of San Pablo, Toledo and have been unable to afford a third surgery. But since we aired that story, a number of people from home and abroad have pledged their support. The family is now awaiting a pathology report to get a full diagnosis of the growth, which will help them to classify the tumor and get the much needed removal procedure. But Catarina was hospitalized on Wednesday at the K.H.M.H.  News Five spoke with the little girl’s grandfather, Juan Ishim, who told us that she is improving slowly and will remain in the hospital until the results are known next week.

Juan Ishim, Catarina’s Grandfather

“Catarina’s condition, in this time now, she is feeling okay, she is getting blood and she could sit up by herself right now and she could walk and move a little bit, so the condition is coming up. It’s okay. The problem is that we nuh get the CAT scan result; as we get the result to know what the next step is for the operation.”

Andrea Polanco

“But at this time, she is hospitalized; can you tell us why is that?”

Juan Ishim

Juan Ishim

“She is hospitalized because of the condition of her weakness, she couldn’t walk or sit up or move but right up to now that she is at the hospital she is getting a treatment.”

Andrea Polanco

“I understand also, that the tumor has an infection, is that correct?”

Juan Ishim

“I should say that it has a little infection but it’s not as worst as it used to be because up to today it is getting a little treatment.”

Andrea Polanco

“Okay, so for how long will she be in the hospital?”

Juan Ishim

“I get to understand that Doctor Zaiden will give us the result on Tuesday on what will happen, if she will be operated here or if she will be going abroad.”

Andrea Polanco

“Is there anyone or people you would like to thank?”

Juan Ishim

“Yes, I would just like to thank Mr. Elroy and Ms Polanco for her job and also my Mission, Mr. Randy and I want to thank him a lot because he has given me a big time help from before. So I say a very big thank you to the people and the public, who are willing to help financially. I am grateful and thankful and appreciate the help of the outcome.”

It has been established from the CT scan, that the tumor is localized and has not caused damage to the child’s head. If you’d like to help the family, the Heritage Bank Account number is 121-1818 or you can contact Mr. Elroy Foreman 670-8576.

  1. Impartial 2 says:

millions became available during election, yet not ONE politician, especially the PM can’t lift a finger to help these poor Belizeans. But, I don’t feel sorry for Belizeans anymore, after March 7, it is obvious they love punishment. Barrow, kudos you won, Belizeans are indeed NOT sophisticated enough to understand certain concepts.

  2. Cuate says:

why or what does this have to do with politics i am truly sorry for this little girl and you are blaming the government for this what a shame

  3. protect the reef says:

Why the mean comment for this special case? Why should Belizeans down south pay? Pay for what? The South produces enough revenues for Our government and the government invests the bulk of the revenues in about 20 constituences max, to ensure a victory. And the rest gets nothing. No opportunities. It’s not good to be commenting on politics for a case like this. I hope impartial 2 and interested people put in some money into the account to help.

  4. Seletar says:

I am sure there are international charities that can help provide effective medical treatment for this poor little girl. Has anybody contacted any such places?

Also, a short video appeal posted on youtube might get great results. We have smart young adults with video cameras and computer knowhow who could do a great service by doing that.

  5. Punkgial says:

This case is not to blame GOB,but it is not fair for this poor Belizean girl to suffer and the GOB Belize do not get involve.when the PM wife was diagnose with breast cancer stage 3 she was rush to Miami. Why not do the same for this little girl? What’s the difference between the PM wife and this poor little? Is it political motivation? It should not be because they are both humans it.

  6. Beverly J says:

I am very touched by this story, a couple years ago I watched a program on TLC (The Learning Channel) about a young girl with similar, if not the same medical condition. Here is a link that will provide a follow-up to that story (“Marlie’s New Face: four years later),as well as contact info for a charitable group that may be able to help Catarina.
The name of the Organization is IKF (International Kids Fund)
    1-877-IKF-KIDS. God Blessings.

  7. Mark says:

God bless this little girl, may the Divine Hand show grace and lead to a complete recovery.

  9. Seletar says:

Cheers for Beverly J for knowing that valuable information and sharing it here.

I hope the family or its Belizean doctor will follow up with that and maybe get real help for the little girl.

  10. AnnonBelizean says:

My only comment to Impartial is to refrain from using this child’s medical conditon for you politcal smear campaign. It’s utterly disgusting, and speaks of your character and moral. This is a level of “as low as it can go” You should be ashamed of yourself.

  11. Jason says:

well we as Belizeans should not have to wait for anyone if it was your child you would want everyone to do the same we are grown people yet give and it shall be given unto you. Charity begins at home let all support no matter how small it it its the taught that counts not the amount

  13. Tumour brain says:

Brain tumours can be treated with surgery, radiation therapy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy. The most important issue in the treatment of these patients, while trying to cure them is to ensure that the quality of life is threatened.

  14. Eder says:

This child needs professional medical attention. National Gegraphic channel showed a documentary “The Man Who Lost His Face ” where Jose Mestre seeks treatment for a massive facial tumor. The tumor was removed successfully by Dr. McKay McKinnon in Chicago at the St. Joseph Hospital. Hopefully this helps:
