P.U.P. says it’s not financed by Ashcroft
In the last minute pitch to electors, Leader of the Opposition, Francis Fonseca appeared this morning on Open Your Eyes. Fonseca touched on a wide range of issues and we asked him about relations with Lord Michael Ashcroft. The U.D.P., in one of its latest political ads, claims that Ashcroft has stepped in at the last minute to finance the People’s United Party’s election campaign. Fonseca was quick to dispel that rumor and says he has had no contact with Ashcroft in years.
Francis Fonseca, Leader, People’s United Party
“Let me make it absolutely clear because here has been a lot of U.D.P. propaganda on this issue; Lord Ashcroft is not funding the People’s United Party, he has not contributed in any way to the People’s United Party campaign. I can tell you, certainly since I became the leader of the P.U.P. I have had absolutely no contact or conversation with him and it’s been perhaps a few years since I have last had contact with him or conversation with him. There are obviously serious issues involving the government and Lord Ashcroft as it relates to his business relationship with the country. I think we have to approach that in a very responsible way and we need to find solutions to these problems. you know I view them and you talk to any rational person out there, if you talk to people in the business community, they see these problems; these legal problems, as dark clouds hanging over the Belizean economy and we need to lift these dark clouds that’s the reality. We have to do it in a responsible way.”
