Politricks Time Again: Campaign workers fired or hired?

Gilroy Usher Jr.

When elections draw near, politicians are always eager to be in front of the cameras. News Five has had its share of calls about the generosity of politicians who wish to have their small acts of goodness televised for the evening news. Those politicians are also very keen to speak about the injustices that occur in the streets of the country. Two such politicians came to visit our studio today.  Father and son team, Gilroy Usher senior is running for the P.U.P. in Port Loyola against Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez and his son Gilroy Usher junior who was once a P.U.P. Belize City Council hopeful. They are championing the cause of Miss Dena and Sylvia Nolberto, two campaign workers for Boots. They claim that Boots fired them for campaigning for the Usher’s. They say it is not so. And though most campaign workers will once again be unemployed after the election results are being polled, they say they are victims. News Five spoke to the two campaign workers and Gilroy Usher Junior who is championing their cause.

Jose Sanchez

“Have you ever worn a shirt or campaigned for Gilroy Usher before today?”

Miss Dena, Campaign Worker

“No sir.”

Jose Sanchez

“Have you ever worn a shirt or campaigned for Gilroy Usher before today?”

Sylvia Nolberto, Campaign Worker

“No, no.”

Gilroy Usher Junior

“I believe that this story is newsworthy my brother because it’s poor people you are dealing with. People need to eat and people need to live and people need to be able to express their freedom—this is a democratic nation. So I don’t think that any minister, especially Boots Martinez has the right to fire people and take bread off their table if he believes that they are campaigning for somebody else. And in this case, these ladies have never worked for us. And so I deem the situation to be a grave injustice.”

Jose Sanchez

“So this is not a campaign ploy?”

Gilroy Usher Junior

“No it is not a campaign ploy.”

Jose Sanchez

“But you do realize this is two days before an election?”

Gilroy Usher Junior

“Yes, but then you need to take into consideration when he did it. he did it Friday; we have no control over what he did.”

Jose Sanchez

“But as I’ve told you before, I’ve spoken to many politicians who come with the same story, but I turn them down. My competitor fired somebody, please do me an interview and I’ve told them before I don’t think it is a story. Why is this one different from any of those that I’ve turned down last week?”

Gilroy Usher Junior

“Well I think that my brother, if you turn down people who come to you; even though it seems minute to you…”

Jose Sanchez

“Politricks, politricks.”

Gilroy Usher Junior

“No listen to me; even though it might seem minute to you, you have a job and I guess you live a very comfortable lifestyle, for these people…”

Jose Sanchez

“I have worked the same job that they have worked and I know and everybody knows when Election Day done, all ah dehn people get fired. That dah standard—there is no job after Election Day.”

Gilroy Usher Junior

“Wait listen to me. It is not the responsibility of media agents to censor or marginalize people. You should give people a right to express themselves. They have been fired; they felt the injustice. And this is of paramount importance to them.”

Jose Sanchez

“Let me ask you; which politician keeps all of these people in shirts in a job after Election Day? It doesn’t happen.”

Gilroy Usher Junior

“This has nothing to do with after election. They were victimized because of Boots believing that they were expressing their freedom of expression. That is a violation of their right. Of course that has nothing to do—of course the man is hiring so many people and he cannot keep everybody.”

Jose Sanchez

I dare to say that the people watching this would say both you and Mr. Martinez are using these women.”

Gilroy Usher Junior

“No. Like I said that is not the case because they came to us and expressed the injustice to us. They never worked for us.”

Jose Sanchez

“So at the end of the day; Vote Gilroy Usher, Senior and Junior—vote P.U.P. You know that’s what the message is at the end of the day.”

Gilroy Usher Junior

“You know it’s not necessarily the message. We have our way of getting that message across—through our campaigners, through our ads and through meeting people face to face and door to door. This is an injustice that I believe is worthy of the nation hearing about. This has nothing to do with politics.”

Jose Sanchez

“Who has wronged you? How have they wronged you?  Dam man wrong. Mr.

Miss Dena

Sylvia Nolberto

“That man wrong; wrong.”

Sylvia Nolberto

“Mister Boots wrong because he treat me too bad. I was surprised of him doing this to me.”

Jose Sanchez

“He thinks you are working for his competitor.”

Sylvia Nolberto

“Yeah. That is what he thinks and he is wrong.”

Jose Sanchez

“How does coming on TV helps you because like I said, once the campaign done, there is no more job. What do you get form being on TV right now?”

Miss Dena

Sylvia Nolberto

“I no understand this but. I wah mek he feel how I feel—let me down in front of people. He make I look bad that day; made me drop tears and all. Look pan me in mi eye and said ih saw me with ih two eyes with Mister Usher shirt on—me and my mother and that is not true.”

Jose Sanchez

“So who do you want the people in your area to vote for?”

Sylvia Nolberto

“I just want them to do the correct thing.”

Jose Sanchez

“And what is the correct thing?”

Sylvia Nolberto

“To vote for the correct person.”

Jose Sanchez

“But who would that be? Who is the person you want them to vote for now?”

Miss Dena

“P.U.P.”

Sylvia Nolberto

“Same thing.”
