A visit from neighboring Quintana Roo

Among the last guests that the current city council will receive before the Municipal Elections is a thirteen member team from the town of Othon P. Blanco in neighboring Quintana Roo. The courtesy call from the visiting delegation was to discuss ongoing projects between the sister cities.  The representatives of the two cities say that they want to strengthen ties and zero in on the tourism benefits for both destinations.

Joaquin Marrufo, Director of Tourism, Othon P. Blanco

“We come just to give some continuance to the program ‘sister cities’ because we co-part the border so we are going to watch what we can do increase the tourism, the economic development, the facilities, the border crossing of people from Belize and Mexico and all that kind of stuff.”

“So any plans for additional projects that you may be looking to working towards within the next year or two years?”

Joaquin Marrufo

“We are looking to have some fun trips so that there is business between Mexican tour operators and Belize tour operators for more business. We are going to make some, ‘incrementar las visitas de ambos paises pero de atraves de los tour operadores’ we want the tour operators to make business, just them, not the governments; just the business people.”

Zenaida Moya, Mayor, Belize City

“We fully expect this sister city relationship to continue. We have set the grounds. I must say that the first time I met with their mayor, he was fresh into office so that’s a plus. Whatever areas we have identified and zero in, and informed him, he has been working along with his councilors so it’s just for our own Belize City council that is coming in, to push forward and reap whatever gains there are for our residents. I think that the will is there.”
