U.D.P. launches its Manifesto

On Wednesday, nominations were held for mayoral and councilor candidates countrywide. The U.D.P. is fighting an uphill battle to remain at City Hall after a disastrous term in office which saw the outgoing mayor Zenaida Moya being expelled from her party. This afternoon, the governing party unveiled its manifesto. Central to its election platform is a recall mechanism. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

On Wednesday the United Democratic Party, in grand fashion, paraded its city council candidates to the Charles Hyde Building where a team of eleven, led by mayoral hopeful Darrel Bradley, was officially nominated.  This afternoon the slate unveiled its manifesto before an audience of supporters at the party’s headquarters.  High on the U.D.P.’s agenda is proposed legislation to reject the position held by the mayor or his councilors should there be any violations while in office.

“We will also lobby the central government to include in the Municipal Authorities Bill provisions for the recall of your mayor and the recall of any councilor candidate who breaches their oath of office.  We are so serious about integrity, we are so serious about honesty in government that I am willing to tell you that if I breach my oath of office I want every single one of you, the U.D.P. first, to be the first ones to challenge me in office and to go and to have me recalled as mayor because we are serious about what we say and we need to put it in the law.”

It is a proposition that has perhaps resulted from previous administrations, particularly during the tenure of outgoing mayor Zenaida Moya, going afoul of their responsibilities to the people of Belize City.  Prime Minister Barrow, in endorsing Bradley’s candidacy, expressed his dissatisfaction; however, he remained confident that previous blunders won’t recur under Bradley’s leadership.

“I am positive that Darrel Bradley as mayor of Belize City will run a tight ship.  I have not been completely satisfied, and that’s to put it mildly, with the way things have happened from time to time at City Hall but there’s no point in crying over spilt milk.  I know that Darrel Bradley and those that are going to be coming into office with him will ensure that the mistakes of the past will not be repeated.”

The manifesto itself is a sixty-five point declaration of principles which combines the vision of the incoming team with that of the past council.  It is also the party’s concept of good governance at the municipal level.

Darrel Bradley

“There is a desire on our part to be comprehensive.  We do recognize that there have been challenges and we want to address those challenges but when I look at the manifesto I see that it’s very forward thinking in terms of our addressing issues of infrastructure, our addressing issues of job creation, our addressing issues which really matter to residents of Belize City.”

Making its return on the manifesto is the development of a beach in the Old Capital which will be used as recreational space.  It was a controversial idea that was initially suggested by Mayor Moya in exchange for a precious part of B.T.L. Park to be surrendered for a parking lot.  While the idea of the beach hasn’t been discarded entirely a new location will be sought.

Darrel Bradley

“We thought that it was a very good idea.  I would not make much of the word other.  What I think that our point is we want to make this idea of a beach within Belize City a reality for residents of Belize City. I think and our emphasis is on building community in Belize City and in order to build community we need to have safe spaces throughout our city where residents can go to enjoy themselves.”

The P.U.P. will be releasing its Belize City Manifesto on February twentieth and its national manifesto on the twenty-first.

Breaking News ! Two UDP were just caught with dual citizenship. Please call your media houses to find out if Its true. IF Shakron cant run then Dean Barrow arrogance cant allow UDP to still run, dont hide it. If its true let the US Canadian and Guatemalan embassies acknowledge that there are no passports for these people.

    Fair is Fair!

  9. Steve says:

It’s senseless to see the UDP presenting a manifesto when the old one was not even fulfilled. The UDP is taking the city residents for fools. As a resident of rural Belize I think Belize city residents are intelligent! Food for thoughts.
