Police wrong to beat Dean Street residents

Dean Barrow

The Gang Suppression Unit (GSU) has made its mark on the western and central sections of the country with drug, ammunition and gun busts. But its presence is hardly welcome in certain neighborhoods and occasionally the GSU sparks controversy over alleged physical abuse of the persons it arrests. Last week Thursday, the GSU allegedly went into houses at the corner of Dean Street and Plues Street. According to the residents, they were asleep in their beds, when doors were broken and bats were used to beat them. There has been some denial by the cops but the prime minister told News Five this morning that he believes there was some police element involved and if the reports are true, what occurred is unacceptable.

Dean Barrow

“I don’t accept that the GSU was not involved; I don’t know that the GSU was, but all the evidence—I wasn’t here and so perhaps I need to be careful. I believe that the GSU was involved and I want to say that there is no way I can countenance anything that appears to be human rights abuses. And while I repeat that I wasn’t in the country, I didn’t see the newscast, I haven’t seen the images; everything that I’ve heard suggests that the officers went overboard. I am going to be discussing this with the police minister and probably going to be discussing it with the commissioner of police and with the head of the GSU, Mister Vidal. I have to be careful; I want to be as moderate as I can in my language—not having seen the evidence—but I want also to be unequivocal about signaling that nothing can justify simply storming into people’s homes and beating up on people. I don’t care who they are. If that’s what happened that cannot be tolerated.”

Not a very prudent comment by our PM. Why not appoint some impartial investigators, and wait until there is actual testimony and other evidence before throwing GSU under the bus?

I don’t understand taking the side of gangsters against law enforcement before the facts are known. Perhaps there is some hidden agenda.

What did you all expect??? Its election eve… he wants every single vote his party could get…. but there is no need to embarass himself so much… as long as the PUP is reigned by the Fonsecas and Musas…… they dont stand much of a chance… lets face it….

Anyway he was the same prime minister who sat down at a table to negotiate (get a “truce”) with those that order the murders of so many people and cause so many crossfire casualties – including innocent children….. so taking side for these church mice…. is nothing….

should have heard finnegan… “dont negotiate with criminals”…. of course… unless they are black and murderous!!!

  7. David says:

Alligator tears for the Gangs…..or the murdered victims of gang violence….

So what you have a problem with the people of a darker skin, running on the PUP slate too. I hope you are just politically blind making a comment like that. Should be ashamed to call yourself a Belizean. I kinda hope you are not a Belizean becaz that just makes you as narrow minded as the UDP.

  10. CEO says:

VERY POOR COMMENT ON THE PART OF THE PM EVEN AFTER ADMITTING HE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!

THE pm SHOULD NOT BE INVOLVED IN POLICE BUSINESS AND PASSING COMMENTS WHEN HE ADMITS NOT TO KLNOW THE FACTS. HE SHOULD LET THOSE INCHARGE HANDLE THESE MATTERS.
