Burglars steal safe with $60,000 from Western Union

Story PictureA day after the murder and shooting, a heist in Belize City netted some unsavory criminals thousands of dollars. The sign outside said “Western Union Coming Soon”, but thieves found the office before the public could. A week ago, Western Union moved its main office to the Thurton Building on Coney Drive. And on Saturday night, a hold up and a burglary were perfectly executed on one of the City’s popular thoroughfares. The office was not open to official business today but the doors were ajar, and the broken glass from the front door and a broken lock were the telltale signs that a crime had occurred. After tying up the security guard, and breaking inside, a thief or thieves removed and escaped with a case containing over sixty thousand dollars. While Western Union officials have decided to stay quiet about the burglary, the cops are looking at all possible leads.

Clemente Palacio, Police Press Officer
“Police responded to Thurton Building where they saw the security guard, who reported that he was accosted by a gunman and subsequently it seems that persons entered the Western Union building and removed a safe containing an undisclosed amount of cash.”

Jose Sanchez
“The security guard was tied up?”

Clemente Palacio
“Yes, that was what he reported.”

Jose Sanchez
“Western Union has moved only a week. With the large amount of cash—I believe it was sixty grand inside—are there any thoughts of it being an inside job?”

Clemente Palacio
“Well, we are pursuing at the moment all leads and of course, as we enter into the in debt investigation nothing will be ruled out. I think the investigators are questioning a number of persons to ascertain who may have committed this act.”

This is not the first time Western Union has been targeted. Prior to moving, its previous location on Regent Street was robbed by three persons. During that May second heist, which occurred in broad daylight, Glenford Williams, the business’ security guard, was shot.
