News of a kidnapping in Concepcion Village

James Moreira

In the north, Corozal police are investigating an early morning kidnapping in Concepcion Village. Shortly before six o’clock a group of five armed, masked men entered the home of twenty-nine year old Marleny Cawich; she was bound and taken hostage. But the kidnappers left behind her newborn baby and a ransom note demanding money from her husband.  A quick and coordinated response by several villagers led to the discovery of the woman in a nearby cane field.  Moments later a special patrol unit teamed up with Corozal police and converged on the scene.

ASP James Moreira, Deputy Officer Commanding Corozal Police

“Sometime after nine I had a team consisting of the Special Patrol Unit which is from Belmopan and the Quick Response Team from Corozal, CIB and Special Branch personnel went into the area; however, before they could have done what they needed to do there was a team of villagers from Concepcion who had already went into the area without our knowledge and when they reached there they took possession of the lady who was kidnapped.”

“My understanding was that there was a brief firefight between the officers and five men who are presumed [to be] the kidnappers.”

ASP James Moreira

“Not the officers, it was the villagers that went before the officers.  It was shortly after that the officers went into the area.”

Isani Cayetano

“Can you confirm if there was a brief shootout between both parties?”

ASP James Moreira

“I wouldn’t say there was a brief shootout but I was made to understand that a gunshot was heard.”

“I was also made to understand that a ransom note was also left at the home of this woman.  Can you also confirm or go into some detail if this is so?”

ASP James Moreira

“Yes there was a note demanding a thousand dollars at the common law husband’s cane field not too far away in the area of the village.”

According to ASP Moreira one man has been detained for questioning in connection with the incident.

Very embarassing for the Police Department that they took FOREVER to respond… The quick response team should be renamed slow response team… GOOD FOR THE VILLAGERS…
