23 years in Belize, but nationality refused

Valda Bodden

Forty nine year old Valda Bodden has been living in Belize for twenty-three years and she has five children born in Belize. So you would think that Bodden, a sanitation worker of BML, would qualify for citizenship. But even in the recent mad rush to naturalize hundreds of immigrants that included Guatemalans, Bodden didn’t make the cut because she was found with a small quantity of weed eight years ago. The Honduran National says she has an ailing mother in Honduras and is unable to leave the country because her passport and social security card have expired. News Five spoke to a very disappointed Bodden today.

Valda Bodden, Citizenship Denied

“I applied fi mi nationality in October, end ah October and I gone through all the process, everything and my interview with Immigration and they tell me I might get the nationality; they call my name and deh text mi and tell mi that ah have to pay three hundred dollars dah dis immigration and ker the receipt dah Belmopan and I do that. When I get up deh neva call my name inna the fus batch ah people, then di man tell mi nuh worry deh wah call the next week Friday. So when deh mi wah call, he call me the Wednesday evening he seh he misplace my police record and seh I have to go dah Belmopan, tek three pictures and photocopy the front ah my passport with twenty five dollars fi get it up deh. Ah gone and deh seh deh couldn’t gimme it because deh nuh si no stamp inna mi passport how ah come in suh he call me the Wednesday and say that deh deny mi nationality because I have wah bad police record. I ask ah weh bad and he seh deh ketch yuh the year two thousand three with a piece ah weed and through that deh deny mi nationality. I nuh understand how that can be denied because I ask questions and I ask the police deh and deh say that that can’t deny my nationality. I live yah fi twenty-three years and I got five pickney born yah and I work for sixteen years and I di pay Social fi seven years now and I can’t go dah Doctor because mi passport expired.”

Andrea Polanco

“So did they tell you when you can reapply?”

Valda Bodden

“They say in a year time; a year because I have to wait ten years before I can get that nationality and I say why he wah do that now and he should ah mi tell mi from the first start nuh mek ah pay the three hundred dollars because I borrow deh money deh.”

Andrea Polanco

“So now what are you going to do? What do you plan to do?”

Valda Bodden

“Hmmm. I nuh know weh fi duh I just come pahn the thing si if anybody help me cause I really need the nationality.”

In the recent mass naturalization leading up to the elections, it is believed that a number of persons did not qualify nor did they have the required documentation. Others did not take the required medical tests and were able to get instant police records.

I’m sorry, but we must have and enforce standards for who may have the PRIVILEGE of living in the Jewel. She may be a nice lady and all that, but the law is the law, and I hope it will be enforced on everyone who wants to immigrate.

We have enough home-grown criminals, we do not need to import even one more.

  2. concerned citizen says:

Belize is so corrupt. I firmly believe that she didnt get it because of the politics there. I understand that she has a record of weed. But come one, every one makes mistakes no one is perfect. how can Belize get other nationals for example, from Guatemala or neighbor countries and make them a Belize citizen. When they don’t even have the requirements. that a bunch of b.s. Belize needs a major change. and the gov should stop getting more powerful, and getting richer. Belizeans let’s step it and demand a change!!

  3. jose says:

  4. dame says:

ALL THEM SPANISH NO ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLE GETTING THEIR CITIZENSHIP THE OTHER DAY ,WHO PROBABLY CAME TO OUR COUNTRY ILLEGALLY DUE TO THE POVERTY IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY. AND THEY CAN’T GIVE THIS LADY CITIZENSHIP WHO LIVE AND PROBABLY PAID TAX FOR ALMOST 23 YEARS . WOW . IS IT BECAUSE SHE’S BLACK AND THEIR TRYING TO GET RID OF THE COLOR PEOPLE IN BELIZE SO IT COULD BE A SPANISH COUNTRY…..???? BELIZE BELIZE BELIZE

  5. bowden says:

She live i Belize for many years an have children that are Belizeans. She should be more than qualify

  6. Be Real says:

Why you get buss with wa weed. You break the law and expect to be given a privilege by the law. Maan please. This lady shouldnot even be complaining or coming to the media. She is just making a mockery of herself. Full stop.
She might be a nice lady. But hey…the letter of the law has to be followed and applied.

  7. subKonshus says:

O Please…Cut a long story short….She black….she got dreadlocks…..she already placed in the system…they don’t need her vote. End of story.

  8. murphy says:

dame and subKonshus, u two the talk lone bs. IT seems two a uno are racist. I agree with concerned citizen, politics is involved in this $#$$ and that’s the bottom line!!!!!

  9. Reply to [Storm] says:

Im sorry, What was that you said? A “Privilege” ?

You really need to assess the way you think. If you havnt been following the news lately, they have given away Nationality to this country to LITERALLY HUNDREDS of imigrants that have only been here for several weeks, if that.

It is ridiculous that they wont give her nationality because she was caught with a stick of weed…it is simply stupid..

  10. belizeanpride says:

she is not the only person either i have two neighbors that tried but had a police record of grievous harm on their police record which they showed me to read it for them and they never get it but i say they have to respect the law in Belize for the same amount of weed bet with that record she will never get a U.S visa in her life so let others learn that for them to get the nationality they need to behave good record in the country for them to qualify. i mean she goes to the media to blow this up she looks bad not the immigration at least they are giving a good reason. immigrants need to learn that our law needs to be respected. let this be taken not politically but a show of respect to our laws of the jewel of ours. comply with the law and regulation to obtain a nationality takes good records in it, no country will accept that clear as that.

  11. wangla seed says:

the des truction of BLACK people in BELIZE is being presided over by KING BARROW!!!!

  12. Earl Grey says:

Having A LITTLE WEED SHOULD NOT BE A CRIME… those trees were given to us IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN.

POLITICS MAKES IT ILLEGAL….man made laws… NOT MORAL LAWS. What if it’s a PART OF HER RELIGION???

  13. Vuk says:

While I’m against those who have immigrated to Belize or any other country breaking the law, I’d have to agree with what the person who responded to “Storm” was implying; what we are looking at here is an abnormal situation.

This increasingly incompetent administration has been busy giving away Belizean citizenship certificates to all sorts of foreigners whose identities are often uncertain and whose registration addresses often have the potential of being fraudulent. Who is to say that many of these people have not committed crimes on a level that’s the same or greater as hers? It’s very likely that they could have.

Thus, after taking into account this context, I don’t see why she’s getting screwed over like this. *If the government is helping all of these other people to get their citizenship certificates regardless of their backgrounds, why can’t they do the same for her?*

  14. joe says:

UNU TALK THAT EVERY BODY GET CITIZENSHIP. UNU CUD PROVE THAT !!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. belizeanpride says:

    @wangla seed

sorry bro but the reality is that black man the kill black man they are doing self eliminations it’s hurting but i accept it hoping you too can accept it. so much killing in the city look at the stats black man again over and over. we need family morals to stop this madness. not barrow nor the opposition it’s us the parents.

  16. Storm says:

“Reply to Storm” misunderstands my position. No, I would not give citizenship to the other hordes, either.

Belize really is the Jewel of the region, and we should only let in people who RAISE our standards, not people who lower them.

Immjigration is not a right; if it were, borders would mean nothing.

But I believe Belize’s very existence is threatened by the kind of “immigration” practices GOB follows. When there are more people whose heart is Guatemalan than Belizean, we will be finished as a nation, and that day is coming sooner than most of you believe. One day soon “naturalized Belizeans” will vote to become part of Guatemala.

Is it that only guatemalans getting citizenship that everybody is saying mentioning only Guatemalans? You guys only know of guatemalans, but but who knows the rest?? If Belizeans come together and step their foot down, then nobody, being it from guatemala or other countries cud come and vote to be part of guatemala, like much of you say or any other country. Look at our country, its own people is destroying it.. Isnt it belizeans killing belizeans??? Sad to say but its tru. Lets get more concerned on that.. And lets see what can be done to stop violence people.. All them killing that is going on in our city..
