VIP says fuel prices killing businesses

Robert "Bobby" Lopez

VIP Chairman Robert ‘Bobby’ Lopez also spoke about several issues of national concern.   According to Lopez, the recent increase of fuel prices is hitting regular consumers and businesses alike.

Robert ‘Bobby’ Lopez, Chairman, VIP

“Another thing our supporters are very concerned about is the resent hike in fuel prices that has sent diesel regular and super in Belmopan and in other far areas over eleven dollars; especially in San Pedro. The tour guides, the fishermen, the farmers are really crying now for some relief and we called over two months ago when our Belize City launch for the government to please consider reducing the windfall tax threshold to forty or fifty dollar—where it was when BNE discovered oil—so that they can use that extra to bring some relief to our people because this economy will not recover with those kinds of fuel prices. It is sending our rice farmers out of business, and our fishermen out of business and every other productive sector is not making money. So that’s our position on that. Last but not least, with an election coming up and several persons seeking reelection, there is a law in place that says that every elected official must disclose annually their income, their liabilities and their assets. Now as far as our investigations have shown, the integrity commission has not tabled one report under this U.D.P. administration. And we are calling on the Belizean people; any elected person seeking reelection that has not disclosed is breaking the law.”

“We’re making this call right now. All of these activities that are taking place that are in contravention of the law; they have to seize now. With regards to what’s taking place, I basically want to express to you all that in terms of the upcoming municipal elections, I want you all to understand that there is a viable option; especially in Belize City and Belmopan and also in P.G.”
