Xiabe villagers and Hugo Patt clash on land issue

Daniel Tzul

Residents of Xaibe in Corozal are up in arms over what they see as a plan to take over land in their community. Chairman Daniel Tzul alleges that since December of 2011 U.D.P. Corozal North Standard Bearer, Hugo Patt and surveyors have been scouting the parcel of land that is on the outskirts of the village. The Chairman says he was never consulted and that is a clear violation of the Village Council Act. Today over two hundred residents took matters in their own hands and started clearing the land for themselves before it is given to residents from Corozal Town. News Five spoke with Tzul via phone who says that police and lands officials were in the area.

Via Phone: Daniel Tzul, Chairman, Xaibe Village

“The people came to inform me that they have surveyors in the area and they ask me if I was the one doing the survey.”

Andrea Polanco

“Okay, how many acres are we talking about here?”

Via Phone: Daniel Tzul

“Umm, approximately there are about two hundred lots; exactly the acres I am not sure because it is four ‘mecates’ for one lot, so it is approximately about fifty acres I would say.”

Andrea Polanco

“Okay and…?”

Via Phone: Daniel Tzul

“Yes so these people come inform me and ask if I knew about this and I told them I was never consulted; I was never informed or anything about this and that is incorrect right because there is a Village Council Act stating that I am the only person who could recommend land here in Xaibe. So I tell them for us to call a meeting and on that meeting on the eleventh of December they decided that mek I send letters to the different people in charge nuh, at the Natural Resources.”

Andrea Polanco

“So what was their response to you?”

Via Phone: Daniel Tzul

“Never ma’am, up to today’s date they have never responded to me. Hence the reason why the people decided to do what they did today.”

Andrea Polanco

“Okay, so what did they do today?”

Via Phone: Daniel Tzul

“What happen is that the people hear the rumors that Hugo Patt is going ahead to distribute the land tomorrow, which is Wednesday. So the people tell me to call an urgent meeting last night and there they decided that they will come out and clean their lot because I am being respected and so they are hearing that people all from Corozal, that Pablo Marin is giving leases to people who are from Corozal to here in Xaibe. Immediately I came out and I saw about ten members of the Police Department and two members of the Lands Department who wanted to have a short talk with me.”

Andrea Polanco

“Okay, so what did they say?”

Via Phone: Daniel Tzul

“Awrite, when we went into the area the members of the Land Department said they were sent to investigate because they were unaware of this. They didn’t know that surveying was what was happening in the village of Xaibe.”

Tzul says the lands officials on site informed him to collect the names of the residents and they will forward the information to the Lands Department in Belmopan.
