Sports Monday update with James Adderley

Good Evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

The Belize Bank Xmas Cup concluded at the Ladyville Football Field yesterday with Old Belize Road United and Westlake of Belize City in a bid to grab the title after a 4 team single round robin play that left City Boys and FC Belize out of the money. Some 10 minutes in, it’s Westlake on the hint for the opener when Jarret Davis launches this bouncer at goal that just inches past the far upright. In response, Delwin Jones goes left side and deals to the cutting Samuel Leslie who beat Stanley Reneau to give the rural boys the 1 zip lead some 12 minutes in. Gilroy Thurton tries to level the scene with this individual effort but the left foot launch was never going to beat Elvis Hercules. A few minutes later, Andres Marin picks out Shannon Flowers who right away push beats Hercules and we’re tied at 1-apiece.

On this press by Old Belize Road, Stanley Reneau fumbles the ball in his goal area but gets help from defensive-man Shannon Flowers at a crucial time. However, on the very next play, Alfred Garnett fires this low cruise missile from outside the eighteen and it crashes into the net as rural takes the 2-1 lead.  In the meantime, this is a nice set piece launch from Vallan Symms but the crossbar becomes the goalkeeper’s best friend. We’re in 2nd half play when Jarrett Davis heads this ball into the goal only to see Hercules come up with a flying save.

It’s more offence from Westlake when Gilroy Thurton picks out Jarret Davis with this nice pass but the keeper falls victim to bad timing. So Samuel Leslie looks to seal the win for Old Belize Road United with this power punch from on top the 18 but Stanley Reneau rises to the occasion. We’re in the waning moments of regulation play when Jarret Davis picks out Leon Cadle and his touch ties the ballgame at 2-apiece to force overtime. Overtime produced no goals so this match goes to penalty kicks. This miss by Gilroy Thurton takes away the 1 goal lead Westlake had. And then Hercules easily handles this weak push by Andres Marin. So now it’s left up to Kevin Pelayo to give Old Belize Road the title and Stanley Reneau is beaten by a ball he got his finders on and the celebration for the Rural Boys begins. We say congratulations. We also want to say kudos to the Police United Football Club who blanked Belize Diesel Barber Shop 2-zip Thursday night to claim the Super League Interoffice Title.  Lenox Castillo who scored both goals emerged with MVP honors, best forward award and scored the most goals in the season.  Oswald Ramos was voted best defence and Andres Marin best coach.

In cycling news, Barney Brown took the A Class of the weekend warriors Road Race presented on the Boom Circuit yesterday beating out Wersen Coye and Mark Gentle in that order. At the B level, it was Dean Belisle 1st, Ryan Willoughby 2nd and Perry Gibson 3rd. In other cycling news, February 17th brings up the 17th annual Valentine Cycle Classic by the Belize Cycling Association.

Meanwhile, as the paddlers get ready for the annual Ruta Maya Race, Belize Bank Bulldogs edged archrivals and defending champions Ziprider in the 5th annual Boom to Manatee Lookout on Saturday by one second. NICH pulled up 3rd in the male category. Unknown won the mixed category. D&D Water Tank took the Junior Class. Print Belize grabbed the pleasure class while Team Police was winner in the female category.

Finally folks, play on Saturday in the Belize City Interoffice Softball Competition saw Telemedia pick up its 3rd consecutive win in 25 to 4 walloping of Belize Water Services as Bernard Pitts gets the win over Andrew Young. In the nightcap it was police crushing Baaba Shap Kit Kat in a 22 to two blast as Dennis Myles picks up the W while Dorrien Jones is tagged with that loss.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
