Witness tampering and murder acquittal

Art Skeet

Three men were freed today of charges because of alleged witness tampering in the murder of Herman ‘Yagga’ Morris in March 2008.  Morris was gunned down in an alley off Lakeview Street while attending a wake in the neighborhood.  Twenty-seven year old Art Skeet and twenty-six year old Giovanni Gentle as well as Marvin Cruz-Reyes were subsequently detained and remanded for the murder but were acquitted today in the courtroom of Justice Adolph Lucas when the main witness, identified as Dawn Jones, refused to testify.

Giovanni Gentle

According to Jones, a resident of Banak Street, she had been receiving numerous death threats since the incident in 2008.  The coercion continued up until two weeks ago forcing Jones to recant an initial statement given to police in which she claims to have seen what transpired that night.  Senior Crown Counsel Trienna Young then made an application to have Jones’ deposition admitted into evidence.  That application was rejected and Young was instructed to have her witness take the stand.

Marvin Cruz Reyes

Fearing for her life Jones’ told the court that she was being placed on the spot and that her life would be in jeopardy if she gave evidence against the accused men.  Shortly before four o’clock this evening Justice Lucas directed a jury of twelve to return a not guilty verdict.  While Gentle was released to his family, Skeet, who is on remand for another murder, and Cruz-Reyes were returned to the Central Prison pending other matters.
