Clearing the Land and voters in Rural North

There’s more on the fast track naturalization and registration. As we reported on Wednesday night, the Belize Rural North area rep, Edmond ‘Clear the Land’ Castro, was seen at a house in this area, facilitating registration of some persons. News Five today caught up with Castro outside the Immigration Department office on Mahogany Street. Castro said that he has been assisting villagers and immigrants for the past four years to get their paper work completed so they can receive their Belizean citizenship.

“Swift processing of people for citizenship, registration for voters—what’s happening in your area?”

Edmond ‘Clear the Land’ Castro, Area Rep. Belize Rural North

“Well we have been doing this for a long time. I remember prior to the last general election, the P.U.P. had the same thing going on; registering people. We never complained, we matched them one for one. They take in one, get one nationalized [and] we take in one. And at the end of the day you saw what happened—beat them almost two to one. Not because my government is nationalizing people. Most of the people on my list have been here for eighteen/twenty years. In most cases, the file that I am working on; this is an old file from back in 2007 where I have filed the paperwork for these people. Now I’m just using the opportunity to finalize their paperwork.”

“So when it comes to the three hundred and odd dollars—the different fees, the medical fees for the tests, etc.—all of that is being done above the board?”

Edmond ‘Clear the Land’ Castro

“Well if you no pay, you no get nothing done my brother. You can’t go to the doctor and expect him to work for free, you can’t bum rush a HIV test, you can’t bum rush wah physical. Everybody for us go in and go to the doctor. The doctor makes sure they have two eye, two hands, two foot and examine them properly. You can’t shortcut the change of paying three hundred for the nationality. I don’t know what is the big fuss.”

Jose Sanchez

“So essentially you’re saying that you’re getting more done for more immigrants than the opposition is doing?”

Edmond ‘Clear the Land’ Castro

“Well I noh see them doing anything. And I would like to have them continue make noise and talk nonsense. While they talk, I’ll work. We’ll continue to clear the land.”

Jose Sanchez

“How many people have you processed since the start of the New Year and perhaps since the last election?”

Edmond ‘Clear the Land’ Castro

“I would say over the past four years. We have never stopped. We are just continuing what we have been doing all along and trying to facilitate the people. As a good area representative, you make sure that you try to take care of your people. Sometime when you take care of one, the entire family of four or five is happy—so there is a multiply effect.”

Jose Sanchez

“So about how many people would you say you have processed for your area?”

Edmond ‘Clear the Land’ Castro

“We processed nuff my brother. And at the end of the day when they call the bell, all of my people legally will be out there in the line taking care of their area rep.”
