Belize top beach and Half Moon Caye for 2012

It’s not all politricks and crime on the news. Belize is already at the epicentre of the 2012 Mayan world places to visit. The website has listed the country on two all-important global lists. Belize is one of the top ten beach destinations for 2012, and the protected site, Half Moon Caye in Lighthouse Reef, has also made it as one of the spots in the world that is worth a visit for diving.  Half Moon Caye is one of the first protected areas in Belize and it is the first marine protected area in Central America. The site is co-managed by the Belize Audubon Society and its Publicity Coordinator, Dirk ‘Birdman’ Francisco explains the significance of the continued celebration and preservation of the area.

“Dirk, a lot of people here find it difficult to find a good beach. Why is Belize rated so high?”

Dirk Francisco, Publicity Coordinator, BAS

“Not only Belize, but Half Moon Caye Monument was chosen as a top ten beach to visit in 2012 by beach which is a beach and fashion critic website. So it is exciting for Belize Audubon Society, the manager of Half Moon Caye Natural Monument to recognize that observation of Half Moon Caye. Why would Half Moon Caye be a top rated beach? The reason is Half Moon Caye is a remote island as you may know in Belize; it is fifty-four miles southeast of Belize City. it is one of the furthest island in the territory of Belize. So we always have a phrase that the Belizeans out on Half Moon Caye are always the first Belizeans to see the sun rise. And it really does have some beautiful sunrise. When you are on Half Moon Caye on the other hand too, you are the last Belizeans to see the sun set above the ocean. So it is quite a unique and beautiful place. It has attractions like a nesting colony of the red-footed booby bird; it has some white sandy beaches, the corals are accessible from the shores of Half Moon Caye; so you can see a diverse array of marine life. And also, the Blue Hole Natural Monument; the Great Blue Hole which is a world renowned dive spot is twenty minutes from Half Moon Caye. And lastly, one of the greatest attractions of Half Moon Caye is the Half Moon Caye wall which is a magnificent coral formation right off the shore of Half Moon Caye Natural Monument. So I encourage most Belizeans; whenever you are planning you trip for 2012—although it is the year of the Mayas; we’re celebrating the Mayan culture this year—take time out to visit some of the beaches and let Half Moon Caye be one of those choices.”

The B.T.B. has released a Mayan Passport and full calendar of Maya themed events for 2012.
