Briceño says registration issues in Orange Walk

John Briceño

The concern about the rush to register and grant citizenship to hundreds has jumped to the forefront of national and political agenda. The Peoples United Party held a press conference this afternoon about what they believe is a blatant corruption of the registration process across the country. First to speak was Former P.U.P. Leader and Orange Walk Central Area Representative John Briceño.

John Briceño, P.U.P. Orange Walk Central

“Just in the past eleven days—between January sixth to January seventeenth—in the Orange Walk District, we have had five hundred and fifty-three new persons that have registered to vote in the next elections. In Orange Walk Central, one hundred and ninety, in Orange Walk East you have eighty-two; in Orange Walk South you have one hundred and sixty-nine and in Orange Walk North you have one hundred and two. What is of even greater concern is that a large number of these persons are registering in illegal addresses; in addresses where they do not live. I need to congratulate the media who last week made a case where you have one Miss Chan that alerted the media that in her house and that of her daughter, four people were illegally registered at their premises—people that they do not know, people that registered there without their consent and people who in effect registered illegal. In Orange Walk Town, we’ve also been investigating a number of these people that have been registering. For instance in Belmopan Street, there are two persons that gave their addresses as Belmopan Street. Our people have gone to every single house in Belmopan Street—there are onlyabout eight houses in that street and a few empty lots and every single one of them tell us they don’t know who these people are. Yesterday, I was campaigning on San Francisco Street. I went to a house and a lady told me that two persons again have been registered illegally at her premises; people that she does not know. Of course we have U.D.P. operatives that have been visiting them after the fact and offering them a bribe; offering them monies so that whenever the elections and boundaries personnel were to check with them; that they would say they do live there. There are also allegations that there are two persons registered even in the house of the Mayor of Orange Walk, Mister Phillip De la Fuente.”
