P.U.P. candidate says system is manipulated

In the countdown to elections, there is a blatant spike in the granting of Belizean citizenship to immigrants. Over the past weekend in Ladyville, registrations were occurring behind a gas station that also houses the office of junior Minister Michael Hutchinson. The processing of Central American migrants was first detected on Wednesday and intensified on Saturday through Sunday night, which is a highly unusual practice. Hutchinson has refused to give an interview to News Five. But his opponent, P.U.P. standard bearer, Dolores Balderamos Garcia says there is nothing wrong with assisting people and that her camp has also assisted others. Balderamos Garcia, however, is irate because she believes that the process is being manipulated.

“We have ongoing registration Jose. My committee and I have been very diligent and active in voter registration—not only in the transfer period of last year in July and August, but ongoing. We’ve done a lot of work October, November up into December and even January this New Year. But what we are trying to highlight at this time is the blatant manipulation of the process of getting nationalized so that the U.D.P.—in control of government, but because of their partisan political objective and agenda—they are abusing the process of nationalizing so that they can pack up the voters list. I can tell you that my opponent, Mister Hutchinson has not really been doing much in terms of voter’s registration at all. I think like the U.D.P.s who have hatched up this plot to pad the voters list, he is waiting until the people get their nationality certificates; they will be taken in to register on mass. What I am protesting against and the P.U.P. are taking a very strong stance on this and I decry and deplore and condemn it absolutely is the abuse of process. I am not against people who would like to get their nationality—I want to make that absolutely clear—I am in no way against the good people of Ladyville who want to get out their nationalizations and get registered to vote. It is the abuse of process and the manipulation of immigration and other officers for the partisan political agenda of the U.D.P. governemtn that we are deploring.

“The question that should be asked is not whether it is legal. The question that should be asked is whether it is the correct thing to do in terms of manipulating the process. And my understanding is that immigration officers are not with it but they are being coerced to participate in the process. The people themselves are having to find the money for a police report at fifty dollars, also a blood test at seventy-five dollars—but they don’t take the blood test. So they have to produce the receipt but the blood test is not being taken—that is another abuse of process. And then they are being charged three hundred dollars for the nationality certificate. But they are being told you have to vote U.D.P. and we are hearing that the moment they get the nationality certificate, they are going to be carted on over to the registration office.”

From information available, over a thousand persons have been granted citizenship in the run up to elections. Another swearing-in is planned for this week in Belmopan.
