B.E.L. rates down 6%

Dean Barrow

The first sitting of the House of Representatives for 2012 took place this morning.  The Prime Minister did not announce the date for general elections, but you can know it is not far away from the layers of generosity that he piled on. First on the agenda was the reduction of electricity rates, which seem to have triggered an immediate nationwide blackout. The Public Utilities Commission announced its tariff review for Belize Electricity Limited on Thursday and today in the Capital, the Prime Minister announced that an additional thousand persons would benefit from the social rate charged to low income electricity consumers.

Dean Barrow

“The short summary of that decision is that electricity rates will now go down by almost three cents per kilowatt hour. In percentage term mister speaker, this is a six point one four percent reduction to consumers and this is the greatest New Year’s gift.  Every sector of the public, of the economy will benefit: the residential consumers, the industrial consumers, the commercial consumers and of course as is always the case with an administration that is always for the people, the poorest will benefit most. That is because mister speaker, the P.U.C.’s  decision adds over one thousand persons to the list of those that pay only a social rate for their electricity consumption. That social rate is currently and already low; twenty-six cents per kilowatt hour as oppose to the average of about forty cents per kilowatt hour that the regular consumer pays. But that twenty-six cents social rate will go down even further now to twenty-four cents and as I said, the number of around seven thousand or so persons that pay only the social rate will increase to eight thousand persons.”

Should I smile for getting $6 off my $100/month bill? Can’t even buy me a gallon of gas. I bet the lucky home owners who got $50,000 loans paid off are smiling.
