Over a hundred youths across the country will be benefitting from basketball skills training from the pros of the Cleveland Basketball School in the United States. A team of trainers and coaches are in the jewel working with the Belize Basketball Federation to execute a five day training session across the country. Today News Five stopped in at the City Center to check-out the youngsters shoot some hoops and get low for the drills.

Paul Haught, Owner & Founder, Cleveland Basketball School

“We are here to work with your players, different ages U-12, U-15, U-18, U-21 players to show them what we are doing that has been real successful in the United States with our skills training and hopefully give them some more knowledge, some more drills to work on so that they can become better players. We also focus on life skills so all of our training classes we either have speakers coming in, we have motivational hand outs, and we talk a lot about attitude and all the things that are important through basketball.”

“How did you guys select Belize to be a part of what you’re doing?”

Paul Haught

“Well coach Tarr, Bernie Tarr lives here and he was a Head Coach in Cleveland, Ohio and we knew him for about ten years and just became friends. A couple of my sons went to his camp for a couple of years and we knew he was helping down here and so when he came down here full time last year we called him to congratulate him and told him that if there is anything we can do to help your organization, we’ll be glad to come down and help.”

“So at the end of working with the children, what happens next?”

Paul Haught

“Hopefully we’ll be back and I know the Federation is going to be here and our goal is to introduce ourselves and let everybody see it. Hopefully we’ll be coming back on a quarter, every quarter and work with the players and help organize some of the things that the Federation been working on so very hard.”

At the end of the drills, Coach Haught says the youngsters will be engaged in friendly competition and receive certificates of completion.
