Kim Simplis Barrow unfettered and brave

Kim Simplis Barrow

Kim Simplis Barrow, the wife of Prime Minister Dean Barrow, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in early November. Since the stunning news, she has been back and forth between Belize and Miami where she has had two rounds of chemotherapy at the Baptist Hospital. There have been ups and downs as treatment progresses and she has scaled down activities. Today, most common side effect of the treatment was evident when Simplis Barrow attended a wheelchair handing over ceremony. She spoke to News Five about her condition and how she has been handling the radical change of pace.

Kim Simplis Barrow, Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

“Today is a good day, let’s put it that way. I leave Saturday for chemo again and then it will just be downhill from there. But I’m staying strong, I’m staying positive. The outpour of support has been tremendous and overwhelming and I am so grateful and thankful for everyone who is praying for me, who has sent positive thoughts to me, who sent me a little message here and there or who tell my husband to say hello and that they’re praying for me. It’s really been overwhelming and I’m so grateful and thankful.”

“How have you been handling such a drastic change in your life?”

Kim Simplis Barrow

“It’s hard because I’m always on the go and I’m always doing and I’m always trying to do and planning ahead so the complete halt in my life was very difficult. But I know that this is a process that I must go through and I have to deal with day by day. So I take each day as it comes and when I’m not feeling well I just remain as calm as possible and in a good environment and when I’m feeling well I try to do things like this. So I’m still not out completely; I can’t not do anything. I have to be involved so it’s good that I have good days and I’m thankful for good days.”

At the conclusion of the chemotherapy, Simplis Barrow will have to undergo a mastectomy since two tumors were discovered in her left breast.
