VIP reprimands media for not doing enough

Robert ‘Bobby’ Lopez

The third party known as Vision Inspired by the People has revealed their candidates for both Belize City and Belmopan Municipal Elections. And while they have fired up their yearning for serving their communities, the Chairman of the VIP, Robert Lopez has fired up his passion for the media. During Wednesday’s launch of VIP City Council slate, Lopez unexpectedly set his anger on the media for not giving that party enough coverage.

Robert ‘Bobby’ Lopez, VIP Chairman

“What would we do if we were in the position of the U.D.P.? And we came up with the following and it was published. And I’d like to see a raise of hands of who read the article that was published by the VIP that said that there would be no recovery without a social conscience and be honest. I see not one hand. And you know why? Because the press always puts the message of the VIP at the back page and hardly anybody goes to the second or last back page. And that’s why I take offense when the media and others will tell us that they don’t hear from the VIP. Well listen; I looked through our records this year and not one month passed and the VIP did not send out at least one or more releases. But guess what the media has been putting us aside—don’t worry about the VIP—that’s what they used to say in Belmopan; that the VIP are spoilers. The VIP has been putting out its message. And when we put out our message, believe me there is consensus among us. There is consensus that comes from Botswana in Africa because we always send it to Hubert. And Hubert responds and says this is what Botswana is doing. I’m asking the media; you’ve been asleep. Wake up!”

For the record, the VIP has had its share of coverage on this station.

Robert, from a PR perspective – never, never publicly blame the media. Even if the perception is true. You will always need them, and besides, it makes you look like you are a complainer. Just don’t do it. Keep working positively and eventually the day will come.

It’s very common to hear complaints about the lack of media coverage. Get use to it though. Really, though, what do you expect?

In Belize crime rule the media headlines, (see history).

So, go ahead and call Botswana tell them that their next action should be so irresistable that the media would have to cover it, despite themselves.

Part of the blame for poor coverage sometimes lies in the movement’s of the media strategy, or lack thereof.

Don’t take it personal. Try again.

I disagree with you Belize Journal. Everybody needs a little spanking. As long as its done with love and in this case he did not offend the media. He was not telling any lies.
Media is the same world wide. Consumers dictate what they wants consequently you see crime, gossip and other social mishaps on the first page but you never hear what really matters. Border incursion, what happened to those police that were caught red handed with drugs in the Southern Highway, what happened to Said Musa’s case, and the list goes on and on. We need to demand a higher standard of reporting and also cover that really matter to Belize.
Finally, everything starts with us, Belizeans. We must show interest in our government and demand a higher level of governance. For example, political debates…etc

Sorry my head is spinning with more thoughts but I should just end it right here. Happy New Year Belize.
