P.U.P. wants investigation into S.S.B.’s write offs

The Social Security Board is scheduled to meet on Wednesday to deal with reports that select staff members have found a way to benefit from the write-off of mortgages of up to fifty thousand dollars offered by the Prime Minister. We first reported about the allegations of insider trading among staff members, including top management, on Friday. Select staff members reportedly were reducing loans above fifty thousand dollars to be able to qualify for the write-off. The opposition picked up the issue today in a release alleging that certain staff members have been promised that once the balances of fifty thousand dollars and lesser amounts are forgiven by GOB, they will be further facilitated with SSB staff loans, at concessionary rates, to pay back commercial banks. The P.U.P. goes further to allege that the C.E.O. is among those who have reduced their loans to be able to qualify for the debt forgiveness even though there’s a requirement of five years employment to qualify for a housing mortgage at the concessionary rates offered to S.S.B. staff. Says the P.U.P. release: The “Friends and Family” plans coupled with the “Feast or Famine” approach of this U.D.P. administration is bankrupting our nation, morally and fiscally; and Belizeans deserve better. On behalf of the people of Belize, as the constitutional Opposition, the P.U.P. demands an immediate investigation of the entire scheme of S.S.B. mortgage debt write off.” Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced the write-off in his New Year’s address. About seven hundred and eighty mortgage holders would qualify for the debt forgiveness.

I’m a very impartial person and really hate this idea of the mortgage write offs. What about the rest of us? Eliminate personal income taxes across the board for all and then you can really spin the Belizean economy.

DEAN BARROW CORRUPT,WHERE IS THE TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY THAT HE PROMISED? LONE LIESSSSSSSSSSSS DEAN BARROW -U LIAD, GOD save us from this corrupt PM, he no good for Belize.

What do u expect? Corruption is so blatant these days. Leaders of our country stooping so low to “force” a win on the elections. Of course the rest will follow- this is what you get when you show this example- somebody smarter than you wants to beat the system.

I DO NOT AGREE with the write-off. This is my money going to pay somebody else’s mortgage. Who pays SSB their money if not us that work and the employer their share? Common sense tells you you are dipping into our pockets for this.
Barrow- why don’t you invest this money in infrastructure? Paving and repaving city streets when our roads in Cayo are in a total disgrace? We contribute so much in tourism dollars and we cannot even get decent a decent surfacing to our main roads? it is the West but geez. road to Caracol, one of our most visited sites feels you are traveling down a picado and not a road.
Common get your job done! You have an F on my books!

Take the dam money and rebuild home for people that live in shacks. Home owners with a $50,000 loan is not poor. Only a selective few will be lucky. Please request a list of the people
that get the help.Let put it this way , if i was a crook and was the prime minister and and have cousin with $60,0000 loan. paid off $10,000 of that loan, now he qualifies for a write off,

I am a single parent with a mortgage that i am struggling to pay every single month….. i wonder what i can do to get on that famous list since i am sure that many of those included in that write off live a fancier lifestyle and have bigger incomes that myself….. i pay taxes every month… over $400 in income tax monthly yet i have never gotten a cent from the government. Why did the government not give that money to the very poor belizean. some whose homes are falling down… some of us are struggling to pay our mortgages, we don’t buy new things and eat out like the rich folks do but we pay our bills honestly… some people have all the lucky… and tomorrow they will be laughing all the way to the bank and spending the money that should have gone to pay off the mortgage on living even more largely…
