Youth who attempted to rob game shop is unfit for trial

After he was treated and released from the K.H.M.H, the minor who was stabbed during an attempted robbery of Arcade World on Freetown Road, was handed over to the police last week. The boy was charged with Attempted Robbery but during court proceedings today, he was unable to furnish basic personal information, and as a result, the Magistrate ordered a full psychiatric evaluation to be presented at his next court appearance on February second. It was also pointed out that the minor may not be fit for trial because in 2009, he was before the courts for a common assault charge when it was determined that he suffered mental problems. Usually in cases like these, the minor would be remanded into custody at the Belize Youth Hostel, but due to his condition, he was handed over into the care of his mother who signed bail for him in the sum of eight hundred dollars. It is alleged that on January fourth, shortly before ten-thirty, the teenager tried to rob the arcade, but the owner, Francisco Rodriguez was inside when the teen entered armed with a knife, demanding money. Rodriguez told police that a struggle ensued and he stabbed the minor to the right rib cage area.

If he’s too crazy to be tried, he’s also too crazy to be on the streets and endanger everybody and everything, a ticking time-bomb, waiting to explode.

I think he must be committed to a mental hospital somewhere.

Rather than buy votes by paying off mortgages, GOB needs to invest in facilities for the mental health of its citizens. A lot of people need some help sometimes, and some people need it all the time.
