Paving city streets upgrades Santi and Lee Mark

Municipal elections and possibly General Elections are on the horizon. Some campaigns ads are being churned out to provide a selling point for politicians. However, an easier way to make a case to the electorate is to do visible groundwork.  If you travel along the north side of Belize City this week you should have noticed a lot of road works and upgrading of city streets. Though works are scheduled city wide, the primary areas, according to the minister of works are Freetown and Caribbean Shores, the haunts of Lee Mark Chang and Santi Castillo. Earlier today News Five spoke to City Councilor Roger Espejo, councilor responsible for Streets on the North Side, and asked if he thinks these upgrades, though welcomed, are strategic pushes to boost Santi and Lee Mark’s campaign.

Roger Espejo, City Councilor

“This area behind me on Princess Margaret Drive, this portion in front of B.T.L. has been sinking for quite some time now. Everybody that traverses this area—by foot or by vehicle—knows that it is a water catchment area after any rain and it has been deteriorating faster and faster in the recent months. So today, in collaboration with the Ministry of Works, a contractor is surface dressing the area. The area has been lifted; work has been happening over the weekend and the area has been lifted. It took quite a number of loads of material. It has been compacted and it has just been surfaced dressed. After two weeks, the service men will come back and lay another coating—so it will be double coated—and it should remain in a  good state of repair for a few years.”

Roger Espejo

“The areas that are being upgraded are primarily between Freetown and Caribbean Shores. Is that correct?”

Roger Espejo

“Well that’s what’s on the immediate agenda, but the Southside is also being addressed. I don’t want to touch too much on that because that is councilor Samuels’ portfolio, but other areas on the Southside are being…”

Jose Sanchez

“But for the north side which is the immediate area, some people would say that with the pending elections it is to assist your candidate Santi Castillo and Lee Mark Chang to help boost them for their election purposes.”

Roger Espejo

“I’ll say upfront, Santi and Lee Mark have been very influential in lobbying for this work actually and we have to give thanks to the P.M. who found the extra budget and through the Ministry of Works made this possible. So they as candidates are doing what they are supposed to do; lobbying government for increased budgeting.”

Jose Sanchez

“And with an impending election on the horizon, would you say that this is all to help Santi Lee Mark get that extra edge so that they can win?”

Roger Espejo

“Again, it is under their purview to do whatever they can for their areas and their community as well as us at the City Council. Whether that helps us in terms of public opinion, that is inevitable; but the fact of the matter is that the work needs to get done and we are just as concerned about having good opinion polls, we are concerned about giving the residents the goods and services that they rightfully deserve.”

Jose Sanchez

“And you, Roger, are also facing an election come March?”

Roger Espejo

“We are facing an election come the seventh of March; that’s correct. The Belize City Council elections and the municipal elections countrywide are slated for the seventh of March. You’re right we have a dynamic team headed by Attorney Darrel Bradley this time around so we are very confident. More work will be coming in the coming months.”

Espejo says maintenance for Queen Helmet and Seashore Drive will also be addressed soon.

Heavenly Father! I thank you for these politicians, especially at election time! Bless them Father, keep them safe and show them the route to Loma de Las Flores Area in Belmopan.
I will not pray for paved street; as you can see Father, just a little gravel on the path that I have to walk on to take me home. I love you, I thank you, I praise you. In Jesus name Amen!

    Sincerely,
    ree

Election time is near but now there is too little resources to try and pave anything for anyone else, d road going to Natural Resources in Belmopan, Lord have mercy i cuss up everyday … Now we have to grudge our neighbors in Mexico and Guats, they have beautiful roads and bridges.
