Toddler needs life saving surgery

Ronelia Ferguson

There’s a sad story tonight about a six week old baby with a rare birth defect. In fact, statistics show that only one in five thousand babies are born with what is known as imperforate anus. Ronelia Ferguson was born with the condition, but it wasn’t detected until weeks later. Her parents, Tanisha Fortnard and Ronald Ferguson are making a desperate plea for assistance to take the baby girl overseas for surgery. As it stands now, the infant is in constant pain because her bowel movements are impeded. Both mother and father were emotional and upset when they spoke to News Five today because they believe the condition should have been detected when the baby was examined at birth.

“I was home with the baby for a month and a half but I didn’t notice it. she was stooling properly—the stool was coming from out of her so I didn’t have a clue or think that such a thing could happen. But when I went to work, I left the baby with a babysitter because I work night and day shift and sometimes I’m tired. Then the baby wasn’t stooling the normal way and I went to the drug store to purchase something to insert in her and that was when I realize that my baby was born without an anus and I really need some help right now with my baby. They say they don’t know how she is surviving right now; if it was a boy he would have died a long time ago. I am asking the public to please assist me with my child.”

“Do you have any idea how much money you will need to raise?”

Tanisha Fortnard

“Well, right now we don’t have the actual figure but then if there is anyone out there who knows more or less how much it costs, they can contact us.”

“So there’s nothing they can do for her here? You’ll have to take her out of the country?”

Tanisha Fortnard

“Yes, we have to take her out of the country. They are saying that a specialist will arrive in November or so but they can’t assure us that they will come that certain date. But I cannot wait and see my baby suffering like this.  She’s always crying and everything. From we went in the hospital, they didn’t give her anything; only Tylenol. Nothing they didn’t give the baby, nothing. Up to now, we did tests and the results haven’t come back as yet.”

“I think the problem has to do—the hospital has a lot to do with it because they discharge the baby saying that everything was okay, you understand? They need to launch an investigation eena dis case because this really noh di mek sense. Dis da di clinic card weh dehn discharge ah with; dis dah di nurse signature and everything. We need fi have wah investigation into this because this dah noh di first case a negligence with the hospital yoh understand. But I am pleading to the public to give us some assistance any way they could.”

Anyone wishing to provide financial assistance can contact Ferguson at 651-2266.

My heart goes out to this Poor family. KHMH is so callous, if they did not recognize the problem at birth it is because the baby was not examined properly at birth. So what is the use of all the renovations of hospitals and clinics, millions spent , if the poor people still receive inferior treatment. you want to say with all these millions spent, fancy equipment, Perera, Longsworth, Coye big salaries they can’t do a simple colostomy on this child.

This is such a sad sad story. This baby was not examined thoroughly or these nurses do not know how their jobs. I gather from this story is that this poor baby was born with either a fistula or with what they are saying. The mother sad she had went to thebathroom so it sure sounds like fistula to me this is where there is a very small opening not big enough for her to go. All these doctors need to do s either colostomy or anoplasty. This birthdefect is sometime genetic too and t tends to skip a generation. I had a very sick baby three years ago she was born at six months and weighing one pound. All kind of problems. She was in the NICU for three months. To the family don’t ever give up on her. She is still surviving. She was meant to be here. I have u guys in my prayers. STAY UP.
