Mexican citizen says he faced extortion in Belize

A prominent Public Accountant from Campeche, Mexico was visiting a relative in Belize earlier this week. But after an encounter with police officers at the Western Highway Mile Four checkpoint, forty-three year old Felipe Javier Chan Chable says he’s not coming back to the Jewel. Felipe and his son, twenty year old Richard Javier Chan Hernandez, claim that they were detained for over an hour on Wednesday morning because of a misunderstanding with an officer stationed at the check point. The men allege that shots were fired; they were threatened and extorted of all their cash. They were allowed to leave when Felipe told the officer that he would contact his embassy if they were assaulted. They are now back home in Mexico, but Felipe spoke to News Five about the incident via phone today.

“We were coming from PG and heading to Orange Walk. But in the area of Belize City, there was a checkpoint and a number of vehicles were lined up on both sides of the highway. The officials signaled that we could go through but soon afterwards my son told me that the police was signaling and we slowed down. But the officer fired a shot and then started used obscene language. My son headed towards him with documents and as soon as he was near the officer, he took him by the collar and pointed a weapon at him. The officer threatened him and asked him if that is the way he behaved in Mexico. I then approached the officer and showed him the documents and inquired why we were being treated this way. The officer said that I had driven past the check point but I told him that he had indicated that I could go through. He said he would confiscate my vehicle because just recently they had arrested a Mexican national with a hundred and twenty kilos of cocaine and that he would strip my vehicle bolt by bolt. He threatened that he would take my vehicle and take me and my family to court and then I would spend a week behind bars.”

“Did you have to pay anything?”

“The officer cooled down and said that we both speak the same language and that it could be sorted out. The officer also told me that I had two infractions and I said I didn’t agree since he told me that I could pass. I said I didn’t know how much to pay and that I had little money left since I was paying for fuel and other expenses. With Mexican pesos and Belize dollars, I gave him around one hundred and fifty dollars Belize.”

Felipe says he will not pursue legal action against the officers since he has no interest in returning to Belize.

i 100% belive this guy, i travel the belizean highways every day and i see tourist being pulled aside and police giving them a hard time very very often, and they do it many times also. I don’t trust no belize police.

  2. Emerildez Montenegro says:

Worst treatment Belizeans get in Mexico.

  3. Mexico Spy says:

5th January 2012 some tourists were picked up at the Chetumal Bus station by a Belizean plated van. About 1 mile away from the ADO Bus Station the van was chased and surrounded by several Chetumal Taxi’s. These Mexican Taxi’s forced the Belizean Van from Corozal to stop and pulled the van owner and tourists out of the van and confiscated it. The Mexican Taxi Drivers claimed that the Belizean van was stealing their customers and threatened the driver and its tourist passengers. They then commandeered the van and drove away with the tourists luggage in it. The tourists and Belizean van driver were ordered to get into one of the kidnapper taxis. Fearing for their lives they refused. They then found they way to the Police station where the van was impounded and being photographed by the police.
Belize needs to look into this as many Mexican Taxi’s drive into the BELIZE FREE ZONE daily taking away business from Belizean Taxi drivers. Also ADO Bus drives into Belize taking away business from Belize busses. On top of that Belizeans are mistreated and have to stand in long lines like cattle at the Mexican Border and fill much paperwork while Mexicans drive IN and OUT of Belize Free Zone like it is a part of Mexico. No paperwork for them, no spraying vehicles for them NO NADA !!!!

  4. maryjane says:

I agree we Belizeans get a very bad treatment in Mexico and they come here expecting to treated like king and queen hell no, we have very bad experience at Mexico so why must we have to treat them good they forget that in Mexico is the home of mordidas what the hell they think

  5. Shark says:

I want to sympathize with this man but I find myself in similar situations every now and then I go to chetumal. I Find myself having to let off a little mordida for doing nothing. Its just a practice done everywhere, but I think its done more over in Chet as compared to Bze.

  6. Joe says:

    !!!!!!!

    Cry like babies!!!!

We get !…… all the time over there But we take it cause we strong enough to do what we got to do.!!

They coming like americans now — like to do but expect not to be done.
I don’t agree with tourist being chanced but don’t like them saying things as if they not use to it. Mexicans get jacked by their own — all the time — and they know it!!!

  7. Jordyleone says:

I am not condoning this act because wrong is wrong, but i simply cannot empathize because my coworker just got extorted yesterday by Mexican Police, and it has happened to me time and time again in Chetumal so guess what, that is exactly how we feel when they do it to us

  8. MADDYVANDIJKDEREALIST says:

At the Mexican/Belize borders both Mexican and Belizean are a bunch of un-educated hogs towards both tourists and locals.

The Belizean officials targets the tourists because they think they can get away with injustice in their country. (Because they usually do)

(This case is an example) the man rather stay away from Belize forever than to deal with the justice system.

People are tired of Belize and Mexico profound ignorance.

  9. Iasland Bwai says:

Police again, always broke and trying to harras innocent people, God man uno calm uno self down, just hope them would treat uno when uno visit there country,. Shame on all police in this country, they are uncivilize, just a bucnh of uneducated @$$ running around. shame on you.

  10. SP says:

Once again these Mexicans feel like they are royalty in Belize. Seems to me you so called Belizean also have his back for trying to defend his case. This thing happens everyday to our people spending our money over in Chetumal. We are so used to that. I would like for that to happen to you Belizean, then see what you think of their police. These mexican stopped me the other day because of a license plate frame, extorted $400 pesos out of me. That’s about $70 belize I laugh at them cause this is a LOT of money for them. And we all know that when the patrulla stops you just say: ‘Como nos arreglamos’ (translation: i’ll give you cash and you let me go, LOL)

No pity for this fool! we go through this everyday at Chetumal while spending our money there.

  12. spanglish says:

    GOOD FOR THOSE ESTUPIDOS MEXICANOS
AN EYE FOR AND EYE AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH, GET BACK A DOSE OF YOUR MEDECINE

    ………….
BUENO PARA USTEDES, SE !@#$%^&*( AHORA, SO YOU SIENTE WHAT WE NEGRITOS FILL WHEN USTEDES MEXICAN TREAT US BIEN MAL MAL, CUANDO YO VISIT CHETUMAL

  13. impartial says:

this is no about mex vs bze. We all know that what the mex sais is true (you just dont take a trip to another country to make up stories) and that the chet cops do the same thing. instead of being critical ignorants, we should all report these corrupt acts by authorities both sides of the border… only then it will stop here and there.
immigration officers on both sides are corrupt, rude ands plain a**holes… let’s stop being stupids you all just because somebody spoke up

  14. Beliceno says:

wrong is wrong, police at the 4 mile cjeck ponit need to do a better job. 99% of the time they are sitiing in the hut and they wave you pass

  15. islander says:

Sadly enough corruption exists on both sides of the border…. both countries need to string up dem chancey babylon.

  16. cry baby says:

Ok so all of you have something to say on this report ,how many of you have got the balls to say it publicly or to the media.(NONE) EVEN WORST ,we allow every foreigner in Belize to do what they want ,why? because we are the ones who help get papers, work permits and every piece of document .with out a signature from a belizean (DOES NOT HAVE TO BE POLITICALLY RELATED)these people cannot get these things .So who’s to blame .??? THAT IS RIGHT US.
Sadly both borders are the same sh…..t we only know what we have been through per say in chetumal .but if you travel this country like i do ,even worst things happen here.

  17. Belizean says:

you wanna put yourself as low as the mexicans? i thought we belizeans were better then mexican or police should be better then their police

  18. Victoria says:

Well people it just shows that we must spend our dollars at home, why go to Chetumal!! Lets support our local Belizean businesses.

  19. Islandboy says:

We should condemn corruption as a whole on both sides of the border and every where. We cannot justify it in Belize only because it happens in Mexico. That is why the world is in such a mess. In order for evil to flourish it only takes Christians and law abiding citizens to do nothing. This has to stop.
