Police release annual crime stats

The crime statistics for the period January to October are out. According to the Belize Police Department’s release, the number of murders at the end of October stood at one hundred and twelve, a small increase compared to one hundred and six during the same period in 2010. For the crimes of rape and carnal knowledge, there was also a small increase compared to last year. While burglaries and thefts are up, there was a notable decrease of forty-four robberies in comparison to last year. The stats show that while murders have increased, there is a decrease in the number of arrests being made. Only carnal knowledge and burglary show a slight increase in the number of persons arrested. In terms of the drugs, including marijuana, crack, cocaine, heroin, methane and crack pipes, there has been a decrease across the board. Records show that in 2010 police arrested twenty-nine more persons than they did this year. According to the release, the number of confiscated firearms fell by one, while ammunition marked a sharp increase of one hundred and seventy-four seized. The number of firearms stolen has remained the same at forty. In terms of the arrests made for firearms, the number has stayed the same, while a marked increase of twenty-seven persons arrested for possession of ammunition is on record. Again, we note that the statistics from the police are for reported crimes from the period of January to October of this year. The statistics are a mixed bag and it appears that the gang truce may be holding in place in respect of violent crimes. According to our estimation the number of murders committed this year stands at one hundred and seventeen, which is four less than it was at mid December 2010.

  4. bzn2dabone says:

@Rod, ur comments are really stupid. You seem to be a PUP mouth piece. People like you are part of the problem because you have no real solution nor any willingness to participate in the process of making things better. First, try to do something to ease the problems, and if you don’t get any participation from others, then you can know that you tried your best and nobody else in interested in making Belize better.

    People getting high on farts?

If the gang truce holds and GOB is able to give jobs to these misguided souls then so be it and lets see a 2012 with much less murders….

THEN LETS STRAIGHTEN UP THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND MAKE IT ILLEGAL FOR ANY OFFICER TO SEARCH A HOUSE FOR WHATEVER REASON WITHOUT A WARRANT…

  7. Elgin Martinez says:

The crime stats don’t even sound right, that $#!% need to be revisited.

  8. islander says:

On STOLEN FIREARMS…….. they should also include RECOVERED FIREARMS… because the Police sometimes do recover firearms that were stolen from legal owners so that would be a good figure to have as well…
