VIP’s List of Demands for the government

Robert ‘Bobby’ Lopez

The amalgamation of the six PNP candidates and VIP’s Belize City municipal slate and a soon to be revealed Belmopan slate, will not impress the P.U.P. and the U.D.P. But VIP’s Bobby Lopez, came from the capital this morning with a list of demands. In addition to calling for elections, Lopez called for the enactment of legislation and policies that would severely limit corruption.

Robert ‘Bobby’ Lopez, VIP Chairman

“Belizean political parties are entrenched in corruption; controlled by political patronage of the big boys as they are called and more recently we see corporatism coming in. VIP therefore calls for the enactment of stiff campaign financing laws and penalties to be enforced by an independent and autonomous institute that will among many things audit all campaign financing for political parties and candidates, investigate and verify our voters list. It is past due. It was supposed to be done in 2006 and both parties alluded to postponed the cleaning of the voters list; the re-registration process as was enacted by law. We call on them to conduct the registration of political parties and individual candidates who are vying for elected office. Today as we stand here, there is no integrity commission—the very statutory body that was created to keep our elected officials honest is nonexistent. The last annual report tabled in the National Assembly—though it was in 2010—the report was for 2008 and it was done by the outgoing commission of the last administration. For the last 4 years then, under this U.D.P. administration, not one report has been tabled in the National Assembly from this U.D.P. commission. We visited the commission just last week and we were told that there is not even a commission because in August of this year, their term ended and they had not seen it important enough to elect new members to the commission. VIP therefore calls on this administration to clean up corruption and to immediately sign the United Nations’ Anti-Corruption Convention. You’ve had four years to do it. We also call on this administration to disclose all the information necessary for transparency international to rank Belize for us; regardless of where they put us, we need to be ranked so we can begin the journey up to number one like our fellows across the Caribbean, Barbados. We also further call for the reinstallation of the office of the Permanent Secretary and abolish immediately the party office of C.E.O. It is time to treat our public officers with dignity. And so we call on a revision of their salaries and we think it needs to be increase so that they don’t need to accept bribes; they don’t need, I mean discourage bribes.”

I’m old enough to remember quite a few years back, in the States someone came up with a plan called “Contract for America,” and it had 10 specific laws they wanted to enact. They rode that to victory in the election, and enacted most of those laws.

Instead of demands, I want to SEE on paper what VIP / PNP proposes to enact if elected. Then I will decide whether to vote for them. And if they win, we should hold them to fulfilling their promises.

Someone said, “An oral promise isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.” Let’s make ALL the parties put their promises in writing — specific things, not mere generalities or catchwords. Then we can compare.

One thing I am proud of is your stand for family values. I have not heard the BNTU, PUP nor UDP say anything about those …………. manuals that the Ministry of Education have allowed to enter our schools. But I heard the VIP loud and clear. That’s the kind of party we need in Belize, the ones that care about our kids and speak out when crap is being taught.

I’m proud of Bobby’s stand on those …………. manuals that were allowed by the Ministry of Education into our schools by the great Satan, USA through the PeaceCorps demons. I have not heard the BNTU, UDP nor PUP comment on how in the world these books were approved to enter the classrooms. And our teachers???? How in the world could you teach that crap. You all can’t read and understand?
