Belize Bank sponsors Xmas party

Over a hundred special needs children in Belize were in a festive mood today. The Stella Maris students were treated to their much anticipated Christmas party, sponsored by the Belize Bank. They had games, dancing and great food to get them in the holiday spirit. But the icing on the cake was a visit from Santa Claus who came bearing bags and bags of gifts. News Five’s Delahnie Bain was also at the Old Belize for today’s celebration.

It was all smiles today at Old Belize where one hundred boys and thirty-six girls attended the third annual Belize Bank Stella Maris Children’s Christmas Party. The partnership with the bank has brought great relief to the school, which previously depended on donations to host the event.

“What happen is we usually seek sponsorship, normally from the banks. Three years ago Belize Bank called and told us that they would like to take over the entire sponsorship. This is the third year that they have lived up to their promises and like I told them in there just a while ago, it’s bigger and better this year.”

Lyndon Guiseppi, Executive Chairman, Belize Bank

“The Belize Bank has been always involved in social activity in Belize and we have partnered with the Stella Maris School for three years. My philosophy is that the way you develop a country is through the development of youths and schools and we can find no better way to contribute to society than in encouraging this type of activity. The Stella Maris School I think is doing a fantastic job, I think they need all the support they can get and the Belize Bank is committed to supporting them.”

As always, the students were treated to a fun filled day, which included the full Christmas feast and gifts.

This morning they were getting their faces painted by—Curly Sue Face Painting, they played games, they’ll be eating lunch shortly and this afternoon Santa Claus will be visiting with gifts for all the kids. The bank paid for the party itself, but our staff was intimately involved because they were the ones who provided all of the gifts for the children today.”

Stella Maris principal, Joy Westby, says the Christmas party is more than just a fun day for the kids.

Joy Westby

“This is actually the only Christmas function that they have and so it really means a lot to them. Sometimes we really don’t know, maybe it’s the only ham and turkey and beans and rice and salad that they’re going to have for the year. Some of our children are unfortunate.”

Delahnie Bain

“They also get Christmas gifts as well.”

Joy Westby

“It’s a whole routine that we go through. I send in the names, the children’s disabilities and what gifts we think would be appropriate and it is so nice that each member of the staff of the Belize Bank, they go into their own pockets and purchase gifts for them. So that in itself is elation for the children and again, it might be the only gift they’re receiving for the year.”

Lyndon Guiseppi

The importance of the event to the bank was evident in the special effort made by Executive Chairman, Lyndon Guiseppi, to participate today.

Lyndon Guiseppi

“I think the best way to lead is from the front and you can’t ask staff to be doing things and not be involved with it. I left a meeting—we were actually doing strategic planning today and I left that strategic planning to be here because I wanted to show that this is not something that we’re doing peripherally, but something that is deeply embedded in the psyche of the organization from the top to the bottom.”

This year, the change of venue was sponsored by Old Belize, which also wanted to share the spirit of the season. Delahnie Bain for News Five.

Lyndon Guiseppi today gave his commitment to Principal Joy Westby that the bank will continue to sponsor the annual Christmas party in the years to come.
