Saturday Expo to support single mother’s project

Arlette Abraham Thompson

The Women’s Department will be hosting an expo on Saturday, featuring the work of participants from the Supporting Single Mother’s Project. It’s an event aimed at showcasing what the women have learnt during the program and while they earn some extra cash for the Christmas season, they are also hoping to attract potential employers. And it’s a win-win for everyone because customers will also be getting manicures and pedicures at unbeatable prices. Job Placement Officer for the Women’s Department, Arlette Abraham Thompson, says there will also be a number of products made by the single mothers available for sale.

“The women from the Supporting Single Mothers project will be out at the NICH parking lot that’s behind Brodies on Regent Street, offering specials on manicures and pedicures for only ten dollars and for the first time we’re doing acrylics for only twenty-five dollars. Products from the sewing aspect of the project will also be on sale and our new line of gourmet vinegars will be on sale. For every ten dollars spent you get a raffle ticket and get a chance to win a gift basket from Becky’s or a round trip to San Pedro courtesy Maya Island Air along with a hundred dollar gift certificate from Hidden Treasure for dinner for two.”

“And this also comes just in time for the Christmas.”

“Yes it does; for anybody who is having a Christmas party coming up or an event and want to get their nails done, can do so at an unbeatable price.”

“And the women who actually participate in the project, they will be the ones benefiting from this expo?”

Arlette Abraham Thompson

“Yes, all proceeds go to the women; we don’t keep anything.”

“Okay, you were also at the big expo in September. Is this something you plan to do more often to give these women some exposure?”

Arlette Abraham Thompson

“Well, what we do every cycle we do an expo. The project is for five months—the training that we offer and each cycle we do an expo to showcase the different skills they have learnt and we try to attract employers for people who might be in need of trained housekeepers, cosmetologists or somebody to sew or to watch their child or children. So that’s the purpose of the expo; to showcase these women and to get exposure and hopefully employment for them. And just in time for the Christmas we have housekeepers if you don’t have time to do your Christmas cleaning or if you’re having a party and you need extra help, give us a call and we can refer somebody to help make your life easy.”

Thompson can be reached at the Women’s Department at 227-7397. Saturday’s expo runs from nine a.m. until five in the evening, but the last appointments will be taken at four o’clock. So head out early and help these single mothers to have Merry Christmas.
