4 Mayoral candidates for former capital; meet Paco Smith

Paco Smith

With municipal elections in less than four months, the political machinery has been in full gear around the city. The U.D.P. and the P.U.P. are out in full force, having presented their slate in the last couple of weeks. While, there are two other mayoral candidates offering themselves, no official slates have been announced. The third party, the Vision Inspired by the People is being led by Paco Smith. Smith told News Five that the party’s platform is integral to their success in the elections and they also present residents with another option.

Paco Smith, Mayoral Candidate, VIP

“First and foremost our platform is steep in integrity. I think for successive administrations in Belize City, we have had lack of integrity at the helm. Definitely integrity and some of the words I’m gonna say may sound like buzzwords, but myself being a student of governance and public policy, I take them extremely seriously. So when we are talking about these elements of good governance: we’re talking integrity, transparency, liaison, community liaison, openness and things of that nature; definitely we are going to take that seriously. My thing is that with regards to the VIP, when we take office in March of 2012 in the Belize City Council, it will not be business as usual. One may recall that I used to work at the City Council several years ago and I pretty much know the inner workings of that place. Of course things have changed and sometimes they say the more things change, the more they stay the same. But to the people of Belize City, I would like to say if you want substantive change, it is time to vote for the VIP because if you deal with the U.D.P. or the P.U.P., it is one of the same—half of a dozen and six of the other. So definitely if you are serious about change, vote VIP because we will definitely make the right moves and changes necessary to bring Belize City back to a place of prominence.”

“So Paco you’ve been on the campaign trail. What has the response been like from a city that is very much red or blue?”

Paco Smith

“Ok Andrea, thank you very much for asking me that. We have gotten very good response from the people. I believe that the people are very fed up with the red and blue. It’s a recurring theme that we get with whomever we talk with. But in a majority sense, people are fed up. They are tired of the blatant lies, false promises; things of that nature. They want something substantive. And I am talking about individuals who are diehard red or blue also. I think that Belizeans are starting to realize that the continuum that we’ve had through successive administrations both at the local and national level have put us in the quagmire in which we find ourselves right now. And that quagmire is steeped in corruption, it is steeped in inadequacies and it is steeped in inefficiencies and those are some of the things that we will definitely address.”

Smith says that they are expecting to contest the election with a full slate.
