Illegal Guatemalan logger gets time in Court

Evelio Adelso Romero

Twenty year old Guatemalan illegal logger, Evelio Adelso Romero will be spending more time on this side of the border. Romero was detained over the past weekend by Friends of Conservation rangers, B.D.F. and Police who found him armed and logging illegally in the Chiquibul National Park. Earlier today he was taken to the San Ignacio Court where his case was dealt with expeditiously. Romero was charged with a total of five counts. For the charge of unlicensed firearm, a point twenty-two rifle, and related ammunition he got a prison term of two years.  Romero was also charged and fined for the unlawful possession of forest produce and illegal conversion of forest produce for the logs he was cutting. For these two offences, the court fines are one thousand dollars or three months in prison. The fifth charge relates to immigration and is for illegal entry into a national park, for which he was fined a thousand dollars. The sentences will run concurrently which means that Romero stands to spend two years behind bars. Romero was caught on Belizean soil in the national park last Friday morning by the Chiquibul Forest Joint Enforcement Unit. Romero, who is believed to have been a part of an eight-man illegal logging team, was caught red-handed armed and equipped with a chainsaw cutting logs in the zone of influence, an area that is just southwest of the Caracol Archaeological Reserve. Less than fifteen hours after the Chiquibul Joint Enforcement Unit detained Romero, it confiscated thousands of Xate leaves and three horses belonging to a minor who managed to escape. The unit also took possession of four chainsaws, ammunition and two firearms.

  1. Manuel Almendar says:

If any ANY Belizean ever cross into Guatemalan territory to do such as they do here, Belizeans are killed K-IL-L-E-D !!!
I say killed because at some time in the past there was abundant chicle in the Guatemalan nearby borders, some Belizeans went there to collect the sap. Ask the older heads, many may still be alive and may remember that at that time, any illegals crossing into Guat territory meant that they they were shot and killed while on top of the trees if seen by the Federales !!!
At-least these Guats are treated like humans nowadays, processed according to law, they are so lucky at this time.

The GOB should open camps for prisoners that did not commit a heinous crime and put them to work the land all along the border with Guatemala, let be productive instead of just feeding them that’s the reason crime is and robbery too like how they say it’s the ramada inn.

  5. JahKid says:

Penalties for destroying our protected land and forestry should be heavier. He will enjoy jail. Pack bread and whatever???? Nice food. Things are difficult, but these people have to learn to respect our territory.
