Under 17 Softball Team brings back silver

A contingent of high school students returned to Belize today; they were ecstatic and with good reason. The female softballers are restoring luster to the sport. The under seventeen players brought back silver medals from Panama where they defeated the home team as well as Guatemala. But there was one team that prevented them from winning the gold, Venezuela. The under seventeen team got a fitting welcome at the Philip Goldson International Airport this morning and News Five’s Delahnie Bain was there.

The Under Seventeen Softball Team was greeted with a warm welcome at the PGIA this morning when they brought a trophy and medals from the Central American and Caribbean Scholar Games in Panama.

Nelbert Flowers, Head Coach, U-17 Softball Team

Nelbert Flowers

“It was sixteen participating in the tournament. They put us in two different divisions, A and B. the top two teams advanced to the playoffs. In our division we came first.  In the playoffs we didn’t do that great because it was a one game playoff for first, gold and silver against Venezuela.”

Delahnie Bain

“Well you came back with a trophy, that’s for what?”

Nelbert Flowers

“Silver. We took the silver.”

The high school girls took down teams from Guatemala and Panama, but one team stood between them and the gold in the playoffs. Nonetheless, team Belize made quite an impression participating for the first time in the tournament.

Kaylee McFadzean, Captain/3rd Base, U-17 Softball Team

“This is my third trip going out of the country and experiencing this is quite interesting.”

Tyra Moreira, Catcher, U-17 Softball Team

Tyra Moreira

“This is my second trip and for me it was interesting because Panama, barely under seventeen go to Panama or go anywhere so I was very excited about the trip and the teams were very challenging because we went there before and we played against them before. The only team we had challenges with was Venezuela, which just entered the competition. So they just gave us that real challenge and we tried our best.”

Ashley Lucas

Ashley Lucas, Pitcher, U-17 Softball Team

“It wasn’t that difficult because I have been on many different trips. But it was still kinda difficult because I wasn’t—it wasn’t… I don’t know how to explain it but it was good. It was good.”

Nelbert Flowers

“[It’s] overwhelming, words cannot express the way how I feel right now.”

Delahnie Bain

“How much preparation went into this before the team headed out.”

Nelbert Flowers

“About six weeks of real intense, basic training.”

And while they didn’t bring home the gold, the players are optimistic that it is within reach if they continue to work on their game.

Ashley Lucas

“Well, I know we could have done better but, me, I’m glad that we brought back something rather than nothing. I just glad that we work together as a team; we cooperate with each other, good sportsmanship. So I just want go back pan wah next trip again and I know we could do better.”

Kaylee McFadzean

“There’s room for more improvement.”

Tyra Moreira

“It shows us that we could have done better but I guess everybody have ups and downs and it just shows our mistakes and we can do better.”

Delahnie Bain for News Five.

Most of the players are from the Belize Rural High School and five were from other high schools.
